Saturday's Copa America encounter between The Celeste and Peru left many with shock, not only because Uruguay were beaten in the penalty shootouts, but the events that played out during the normal game time.
It was one of those games that leaves one wondering if this conception of the supernatural having influence on the outcome of football matches were actually realistic. This topic have generated lots of arguments on different social media outlets, however, it doesn't seem like the proponents from either side are ready to give up what they believe.
Growing up in a country were Religious beliefs influence lots of societal attitudes and even the legal system to some extent, it's quite surprising to me that I've been obstinate in believing that the supernatural do interfere in football games.
In a continent like mine were there are signs of possible practices of black magic or other seemingly religious rites, not pitching tent on that belief that unseen forces do decide games could make many misconstrue you for an atheist. I've not seen a reasonable reason to believe that, at least not yet.
If that concept was something close to reality, perhaps an African nation should have won the World Cup or at least get to the Finals. Here in Africa, specifically in my Country Nigeria, there are lots of Religious practices with Christians and Moslems being the dominant ones. The streets are filled with Churches and Mosques and these clerics are perhaps one of the most respected persons in the country. However, our counterparts in Europe who are a bit more Liberal play better and gets the deserved results.
Uruguay vs Peru Result Unsettled Me Yet Again
Uruguay went into the match as the undisputed favorites. No one would have subjected that to a debate considering the star studded squad at they have in the tournament. From the goal hungry dragons like Suarez and Cavani to an Athletico Madrid's experienced defender Diego Godin, this team were definitely one of the top favorites of the tournament, even ahead of Argentina.
Not so many gave Peru a chance, I didn't either. Maybe if betscorum had featured the Copa America, I would have been among those who would have lost hundreds of scorum coins. In a match that saw Peru unable to hit the target all through the ninety minutes, and Uruguay having three goals ruled out as offside, you wouldn't blame me for saying the gods are angry with Uruguay. But would you even belief that the supernatural interfered in the game?
And then, did you that awesome opportunity squandered by Edinson midway into the first half? That was crazy and it all appeared like the match was stage managed. He was just six yards away from goal line and yet couldn't hit the target. And most times, when misfortune strikes, it spares no one. Both Godin and Suarez have the part they played to give Peru an edge. With Suarez unable to score his side's first spot kick, it was an ominous omen of the unpredictable, Peru defeated mighty Uruguay.
