The Super Falcons have truly proven their superiority as they continue to soar over the whole continent. The Bayana Bayana will feel bitter for this as they were an inch close to shooting down the falcons this time. Too bad they could barely shoot past the goal keeper. They had hoped for their first ever Africa Women Cup Of Nations (AWCON) title.

While the Super Falcons showed experience in their composure; the younger, agile and horny South Africans were constantly a thorn in the flesh of the Nigerians with their remarkable organisation. The Super Falcons of Nigeria had a heroine in Tochukwu Oluehi who had pulled off incredible saves throughout the game, including a decisive penalty in the shootout.

Meanwhile, one of our star girls Asisat Oshoala had missed a penalty kick during the game after the south African goalie, Swart had fouled another of our star girls, Francesca Ordega in the box.

After the match had ended goalless, the Super Falcons again missed their first penalty of the shootout when Onome Ebi beat Swart but was denied by the woodwork. It felt like everything in our country was bound to miss; missing budget, missing money and now, missing penalties. Nigerians were already heartbroken but patriotism would not let them give up immediately.

At the viewing centre, I could hear them shout ‘’keeper catch, keeper catch’’ when a South African stepped forward to take a penalty. Oluehi must have finally heard their cries as she dived right to save the shot from south Africa’s Linda Motlhalo to give the super falcons a 4:3 win on penalties and another AWCON trophy.

YouTube - Highlights from the penalty shootout

Apart from the fact that the Super falcons have now won this competition back-to-back-to-back (2014,2016,2018), they have just clinched the title for a record nine times, meaning that they have failed to emerge winners only twice since inception of the tournament.

On the other hand, their male counterparts, The Super Eagles have won the AFCON just thrice. Does this affirm the saying that ‘’what a man can do, a woman can do better’’? We all hope that The Super Eagles get challenged by this and show their worth in the 2019 AFCON tournament.
