In recent years, the Dutch football has been in crisis, as the national team missed both Euro 2016 and the World Cup 2018.
However, football academies in Holland are still doing a good job, and here is a list of five young talents that may become international stars in future and bring "Oranje" back to glory in the years to come.
Frenkie de Jong
At 21, the talented box-to-box midfielder is yet to make his debut for the national team, but he is already a key figure at Ajax. Following his breakthrough last season, de Jong attracted an interest from Barcelona, who would like to sign him already this summer. However, Ajax does not plan to let the versatile and intelligent player go now, so he will probably spend another year in Amsterdam before moving to a big foreign club.
Rick van Drongelen
In Holland, he is called "The Machine" for his winning mentality. The product of Sparta Rotterdam, he moved abroad last summer at the age of 19, signing with Germany's Hamburg. Maybe he left Holland too early and to the wrong club, given that HSV were relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time ever. Maybe it would have been a better option to make a step to Ajax or PSV first. Still van Drongelen has a huge potential and is seen as one of the best young Dutch defenders, so his debut for the national team is probably just a matter of time.
Matthijs de Ligt
The famous Ajax academy has produced a lot of stars, and de Ligt is one of the newest examples. One of the biggest defensive talents in world football won his first cap for Holland at the age of 17, after starting just two games for his club. Now he is already a regular starter and Ajax and has seven matches for "Oranje" under his belt. A techically gifted centre back with leadership qualities, De Ligt has already some offers from big clubs, but for now it is probably better for the him to stay for a year or two in Amsterdam.
Donny van de Beek
Another Ajax prodigy, who is a graduate of the club academy. The attacking midfielder became a regular starter at his club last season, following Davy Klaassen's departure to Everton. And he enjoyed a good year, scoring 11 goals in 34 Eredivisie matches. Besides, the 21-year-old has already won 4 caps for Holland. Just like his teammates de Jong and de Ligt, van de Beek has been closely followed by foreign heavyweights, but Ajax has been working hard on keeping the trio together for at least one more year.
Steven Bergwijn
Before the age of 14, the winger played at the youth of Ajax, but then moved to PSV where he later debuted in the Dutch league. At 20, Bergwijn is already an established player in Eindhoven and a candidate for the national team. His style of playing is somewhat similar to that of Arjen Robben - Steven is also quite fast, he has good dribbling skills and likes to move inwards to the centre, taking a shot himself or squaring the ball to a teammate.
