Losing a football game can be derailing especially the manner at which it happened. Cup ties like the copa dey Rey is another avenue for the “small teams” to get a chance at glimpse of winning a trophy aside the league which is usually far from the reach of the small boys, but these big teams still won’t spare them taking every chance they get to hit the net. It was a day for Almeria management and her fans will want to forget in a hurry.

Meet UD Almeria

Is a Spanish football club under the chairmanship of Alfonso Garcia founded in 1989 and currently plays his football in the Spanish Segunda Division where he has spent most of his league term, Almeria have managed to play top flight football in the Spanish la liga for just six seasons with their last being the 2014/15 season. Their best ever run was in 2010/11 season where they managed to reach the semifinals of the Copa del Rey but where relegated same season.

Match Facts

It was the Spanish Copa dey Rey knockout round, this time it was Almeria who was at the receiving end as Villarreal didn’t spare them this time. The match was scheduled for December 5th and Villarreal hosted UD Almeria at the Estadio de la Ceramica, a stadium with about 24,890 capacities.

After a 3-3 draw in the first leg at home to Villarreal they came into this game with lots of high hopes of getting the qualification ticket for the next round.

But little did they know that they were about taking their bath at the river of goals.

A team from the lower division facing a top flight team, Almeria was definitely the underdog coming into this encounter.

The Match

The coach of Villarreal Javier Calleja woulnt take any chance in this match up, he fielded a strong team against a side who pulled a shocking draw in the first leg, the attacking front was led by Columbian Carlos Becca and Cameroons Karl Toko Ekambi who completed his hatrick of the game just in the first half, scoring at the 23, 30 and 36 minute of the game before Carlos Becca scored again in additional time of the half to make the score four nil before the half time whistle.

Second half began and it was Ekambi again who opens the scoring just two minutes into the second period. Villarreal wasn’t going to rest their nerves Morreno scored the sixth and Becca scored his second in the 83 minute, one minute before normal time Raba completed the riot as Almeria got smashed 8-0 and 11-3 on aggregate.

The last time Almeria suffered such a loss was against Barcelona in November 2010 afterwards their then coach was sacked.

My final words

Almeria put up a good fight in the first leg, though lacked the concentration and experience to finish the job in the second leg.

So my dear Almeria dust yourself and look into the future, plenty opportunities awaits you.
