Against the arch-rivals Liverpool, United played a scoreless 0-0 draw at Old Trafford which means United now drops out of the top 4 to the fifth place. Against Liverpool, United was hit hard by the injury and it summed up the whole match for United. United was forced to make all 3 substitutions before the first half. Not only United, but Liverpool also made an early substitution after an injury to Firmino. United was the better team in the match and showed more hunger for goals while Liverpool was happy possessing the ball. The league leaders managed only 1 shot in the goal for the whole match against United.

Solskjaer didn't have his best 11 to pick against Liverpool. First, Nemanja Matic picked ann injury while in training which means Scott McTominay started as the defensive midfielder along with Pogba and Herrera. Without Martial and Lingard, Solskjaer opted the front 2 of Lukaku and Rashford. Lingard started from the bench for United. Mata played behind the front two in the 4-3-1-2 formation. Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof partnered at the back for United. For Liverpool, they started in a 4-3-3 formation with Salah, Mane, and Firmino leading the line. James Milner started at the right-back while Arnold was left out in the bench.

The first half was all about the injury and the substitution. First to leave the field was Ander Herrera who had been the best player for United recently at the 21st minute. He went down with the hamstring injury and was replaced by Andreas Pereira. Rashford was also struggling with the heavy challenge on him early in the match. When Rashford was about to be replaced, Juan Mata went down and was replaced by another unfit player Lingard. Lingard didn't last long either and was finally replaced by Alexis Sanchez in the 43rd minute after spending around 20 minutes in the ground. For Liverpool, Daniel Sturridge replaced the injured Firmino in the 31st minute. Rashford although struggling throughout the whole game had no way out to get substituted and was lost in the whole game.

Besides the injury, both teams didn't look like scoring in the first half. Liverpool wasted two good opportunities, a freekick from the box and one from just outside the box. The best chance in the first half fell to Lingard. Luakaku and Pogba combined to send Lingard through but Alisson was brave to get to the ball and take control of it.

After the half, United kept on attacking to get maximum from the league leader at Old Trafford despite being short of quality while Liverpool was happily holding the ball. Early in the second half, Pogba could only head it to the hand of Alisson from the free kick of Young. In another occasion, United put a ball into the goal but was ruled offside. After Pogba won the freekick, United attempted a training ground move which led Matip to put the ball into the net. And the final chance fell to Chris Smalling who missed it by inches.

Overall, it was a well earned 1 point for United after being hit hard by injury early on. United would consider themselves unlucky not to get all 3 points after Liverpool didn't do anything for the goal. With this draw, United dropped to the fifth after Arsenal won against Southampton to move to the fourth. Liverpool goes to the top of the league with a point lead against City.
