The phrase all good things come to an end came sooner rather than expected for Messi at Barcelona and everyone associated with football is still in shock. Messi is currently aged 34 years and with the level at which he still performs, one could argue that he still has five years of football left in him and many will argue that he would probably play those five years at Barcelona.
When I came across the news of Messi not signing a contract with Barcelona on goal.com, I firstly discarded the news as either fake or just a prank. Then this escalated quickly as legends attached to Barca started paying homage and respect to the wizard and probably the best player in the club history. I would have that Barcelona will sign Messi on a new deal due to his acceptance of taking a 50% wage cut yet Barca could not see the contract through.
Barcelona debt has been one factor that has hindered them in the transfer season, but no one saw it as one factor to let their best player by a mile leave for nothing. Although a lot has been said about the debt situation which has rocked and affected almost all teams in Spain due to corona restricting fans to watch the games from their television set there also making revenues hard to come by.
This situation has limited Barcelona to signing only free agents and at the time of writing, they are yet to unveil any of their players. The extent of which how broke Barcelona is has been highlighted as all signed players must take a pay cut to join the club. Barcelona has let go of 1st team players this season than they ever did in their club history.
Messi departing will not help Barcelona recover from their financial woes, but he also gives them breathing space as they must pay less on wages, which is a good thing for them. The club’s image is in shambles as of now as many fans do not agree about the whole situation and how bad things turned out. Some have gone further to renounce their support for the Barcelona team and vow to support any team Messi lines up for.
La Liga will further suffer as the league will become less attractive due to no major elite player to watch such as Messi. Although when Ronaldo left Spain for Italy, Spain football become much less attractive and El Classico much boring but people still watched on as Messi still turns out for Barca but with Messi gone, the league just became less attractive and getting money from Tv rights by la Liga teams will be much harder.
This is indeed one of the most shocking news for a long while in football but in life, all good things surely will come to an end. In that regard, Messi being a free agent has attracted many clubs, and I feel that PSG will be the team to win his signature. Kindly let me know the team you feel will win Messi signature in the post's comment box.
