FC Barcelona took on Villarreal CF on Saturday, the 25th of April in a most important fixture away from home. Their rivals, Real Madrid had been held to a 0-0 scoreline by Real Betis the previous day and Barça knew that a win was needed to go level with Real on 71 points and close the gap between themselves and first placed Athletico Madrid to just 2 points.
The game went off to a bright start for the Blaugranas as they controlled most of the possession in the opening minutes and threatened the opposition's goal a few times. The first goal was to come as a heartbreaker to them though, as Villarreal's Samuel Chukwueze beat his markers brilliantly and found the net in the 26th minute of the first half. That lead lasted for just 2 minutes as Barça replied speedily through Antoine Griezmann's world class chip over Sergio Asenjo in the Villarreal goal.
Griezmann wasn't done there as he got his second and Barça's second of the game in the 35th minute thanks to a defensive error by Villarreal. Villarreal tried to stage a fight back and Barça tried harder for a third but the game not to have any other goals till the end of 90 minutes.
With 6 games to go in the league, Barça are still very much in this title race and are even certain to win it if they win all of their remaining fixtures. The next game would be on Thursday as they take on Granada at home in the Camp Nou before going away to Valencia on the 2nd of May and then eventually they go on to what could be the title decider on the 8th of May against Athletico Madrid. Great game for the Blaugranas today though and a great performance from Antoinne Griezmann in particular !!
