After being subbed off and booed by United fans against Newcastle, Joshua Zirkzee was moved to tears. He had a poor game, but this isn’t surprising considering Manchester United’s struggles lately. It raises the question: is it the Dutch players’ inability to adjust to the Premier League, or is Manchester United itself the problem?

Zirkzee just joined in August 2024, and while I’m not saying he’s been fantastic, booing your own player like that is nothing short of shitholsery. There are other players who deserve just as much criticism, if not more. Take Anthony, for example. He was a €85 million signing in 2022, yet he’s hardly made an impact. Sure, he wasn’t in the starting lineup today, but that’s part of the problem. Why has he failed to deliver after such a big investment?

At the same time, there’s no consistency in the way fans react to poor performances. If you’re going to boo Zirkzee for one bad game, then you should be equally critical of other players who have been underperforming consistently. Onana, for instance, was abysmal today. He was basically a basket for the opposition, letting in goals that should have been stopped. The criticism of Onana is inevitable, but at least it's consistent. Where is the same energy for others?

Let's talk about the defense. De Ligt and Martinez were atrocious against Newcastle, and they need to be subbed off every game at this rate. There was also a moment in the first half when Amad was completely isolated. Where was Houjind? Amad couldn’t even cross because there was no one in the box. If you’re looking for a goal, where are your forwards? Why aren’t they in position? It was frustrating to watch Amad struggle with no support.Dalot also had a very disappointing game.

The problems aren’t just in one area of the pitch; the whole team is struggling. We often talk about Onana’s mistakes, but the defense is just as bad. De Ligt and Martinez were caught out multiple times, leaving the team vulnerable.

It’s also worrying that many players who leave Manchester United seem to do well at their new clubs.Maybe the problem with United goes beyond just the coach or players. Maybe it’s something deeper in the club’s culture.Until the real issue is figured out, I’ll keep watching every game, hoping things improve. But at this point, it feels like something needs to change at Manchester United.
