Why is this happening to us now especially when we CR7 left us for Juventus Embarrassing. We’ve been defeated by Deportivo Alaves, a club who hasn’t beaten us since 1931. We’ve failed to score a single goal in 3 La Liga matches in a row for the first time 2002, and it's now been 4 consecutive matches in a row without a goal in all competitions after our defeat to CSKA Moscow in midweek. This is also our second defeat in a row and third in the last four matches.
We just can’t seem to come even close to having even a chance of scoring a goal. We can’t create any really good chances at all. Our team kept like 70% of the possession of the ball yet they just couldn’t do anything at all with the ball at their feet that could’ve helped us score a goal. Sure, it might not help that all 10 outfield players of the opposition are sitting back on defence, the majority staying in the box, and also not giving you any freedom on the wing, but come on, there has to be some way to break a defence down.
To support a team however, you have to believe that there is a way for things get fixed, so here are two things i have to say on going about fixing our attack:
1 - Benzema And Mariano Together
Play Benzema and Mariano together on the pitch at the same time. Here’s our current scenario with strikers; we have Benzema, the one who starts every game. Benzema is not someone who you expect to score a goal, but instead, what he does is drop deep and drift to the wings, attracting defenders to follow him which brings them out of their positions, creating space for another attacker to run into and score a goal, with sometimes Benzema assisting the goal himself. However, with Ronaldo gone, Benzema now has no player to assist, no player to utilize any space he creates for an attacker, he’s a support striker who was nobody to support. Then, in the second half, since we are failing to get goals and we badly need a goal to be scored, Benzema is taken off of the pitch and our other striker comes on, Mariano. Mariano is someone who does have the ability to score goals, scoring over 20 goals for Lyon last season, he’s a target man. However, he needs chances to be created for him, but the team is lacking the ability to create clear chances for a player to even come close to scoring a goal. So basically, Mariano is lacking support, and Benzema is lacking someone to be supporting. How do you solve the problem? Play Benzema and Mariano together! Benzema will finally have a player who can utilize the space he creates and chances he creates, a player who he can support, and Mariano will finally the adequate support and adequate amount of space he needs to have the chances to be able to score goals. They go hand in hand with each other. Sooner or later, Lopetegui HAS to try this.
•2 Vinicius Should Be Giving More Time
Give Vinicius more time on the pitch. With Marcelo out injured, our team is lacking a player a decisive player on the wing with technique and the ability to beat opposition defenders with the ball at their feet and be able to create chances. As young, as raw, and as inexperienced Vinicius may be, he has those qualities. He has the pace and the technique on the ball to be able to beat defenders, and he has the great ability to create chances with his decisiveness and his directness, he has the ability to create something out of nothing in the penalty area no matter how many defenders are in his way. That’s what we really need right now. Lopetegui has been putting Vinicius into matches but he puts him on way too late into the game. You can’t do anything with that little amount of time on the pitch, a player needs some time to be able to grow into the match and get used to everything going on around him. I feel that with extended time on the pitch, Vinicius can be able to completely change a match and do great things, he’s that talented.
WE ARE GOING TO BOUNCE BACK
It may be tough right now, but only a plastic fan stops supporting a team when they’re having a rough period and they’re not winning. You can’t be a proper fan if you lose your optimism for better things to happen in the next games. I continue to back my team and I continue to have optimism for our situation to improve. The absences of Marcelo and Isco have been huge but I really hope that we can get back to winning ways and score more goals when they return. They really do completely change our offence and the way we play.
