Barcelona legend Carles Rexach admits that Real Madrid are now on fire. Only, Real Madrid is top of the standings because lucky to win against Real Valladolid.
Real Madrid successfully captured the top of the La Liga season 2019/2020 from Barcelona in Week 21. When Barcelona lost to Valencia, Real Madrid won over Valladolid this week.
Now, Real Madrid leads the standings with 46 points. Zinedine Zidane's troops are three points ahead of Barcelona. Real Madrid are also superior on goal difference compared to Barcelona.
Real Madrid won the top of the table after they won 1-0 over Valladolid, through a single goal by Nacho Fernandez in the 78th minute. This result is considered Carles Rexach as luck.
Real Madrid are just lucky
According to Carles Rexach, all the matches in La Liga in the 2019/2020 season did not go easy. Including Real Madrid's match against Valladolid. Carles Rexach assesses Real Madrid only won because it was lucky.
"Real Madrid are really onfire. They excel in the standings, but they only won 1-0 yesterday and were lucky. No team has won easily this season," Carles Rexach was quoted as saying from Marca.
Real Madrid recently performed well. Although several key players were injured, Zinedine Zidane was still able to bring his team to appear consistent. Real Madrid itself has been untouchable for a long time.
The last time Real Madrid lost was in October 2019. At that time, Real Madrid lost 1-0 to Mallorca in the 9th week of La Liga at the Iberostar Estadi. After this defeat, Real Madrid have never lost in all competitions.
In contrast to Real Madrid, Barcelona is now in a difficult period. Substitution of coaches does not help much to lift team performance. So far, Quique Setien has not shown its best performance.
"Every change has a surprise and maybe the problem that Barcelona has is that they have a lot of ball possession but didn't get a goal in their first few games," Carles Rexach said.
"Sometimes it's not easy to change things very quickly because sometimes the players can't understand. Obviously, change takes time and can't be fast," Carles Rexach said.
Under Quique Setien, Barcelona appeared with a dominant possession. However, they had difficulty scoring goals including in wins over Granada and Ibiza. Then, Los Cules lost to Valencia.
In addition to the adaptation factor to Quique Setien's playing style, one of Barcelona's main problems is the injury suffered by Luis Suarez. Without El Pistolero, Lionel Messi does not have an ideal tandem on the front lines.
However, according to Carles Rexach, Barcelona currently do not need additional attackers. They just need time to make players unified in the style of Quique Setien, as well as the duo Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann.
"Let [Antoine] Griezmann play up front, that's his position. He can play in his position and I don't know if that [buying a new striker] is panic," Carles Rexach said.
