Hello everyone! Welcome back to another beautiful and educating post from @Oxygen02. I have been hearing lot of discussion, argument and fallacies on the myth behind the number 9 jersey at Chelsea and it is no more a news that their latest signing in the January transfer window, Gonzalo Higuain has be handed the number 9 jersey.

Higuain joined the club on a 6 months loan with an option of extending the loan if possible but many fans have been saying things like can he break the curse on the number 9 jersey and that is why we need to take a look at some of the players who has worn the number 9 jersey at the club.

Mateja Kežman

Mateja Kežman is a Serbia professional player who plays for Chelsea football Club in the 2004/2005 season. He was a prolific striker who hold the best scoring record after netting 105 goals in 122 appearances in the dutch league. He joined Chelsea in 2004 after the club had secured the services of Jose Mourinho, he made 24 appearances for Chelsea in the premier league with only 4 goals, 3 appearances in the FA cup with only 1 goal, he failed to registered a goal for the club in the Europa league after playing 9 matches, 4 appearances in the league cup with 2 goals and that bring his overall appearances to 41 matches with just 7 goals which is really bad for a player who had set a record in the dutch league. He was part of the team that won the premier league and the league cup after scoring for Chelsea in the final before been sold to Atletico Madrid.

Hernan Crespo

Hernan Crespo is a professional footballer who plays for Argentina, he started his career at River plate in 1993. He played 25 matches and scored 13 goals for the club in 93/94 season and between 1993 to 1996, he appeared for the club in 62 matches and scoring 23 goals before joining Parma where he spent 4 seasons. His last season at the club was really a memorable one scoring 22 goals in 34 matches, he play for Lazio and Inter Milan before joining Chelsea in 2003/2004 season. He scored 10 goals for Chelsea in 19 matches before joining AC Milan on loan in the following year and in 2006, he returned back to his parent club and scored another 10 goals in 30 appearances and that brings his overall tally to 20 goals in 49 appearances before joining Inter Milan on another loan in August 2006.

Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres was a Spanish player who plays for Atletico Madrid and Liverpool FC before joining Chelsea on a record signing fees. He was a product of Atletico Madrid youth before signing his first professional contract at the age of 15 years old. Torres won everything with the club before joining Liverpool FC where he became the quickest player to reach 50 league goals for Liverpool. He joining Chelsea in 2010 on record fees of £50m and appeared for Chelsea in 2010/2011 in 18 matches with just only 1 goal and in 11/12 season, he scored 11 goals in 49 appearances, he scored 6 goals in 32 league matches. Torres spent 4 seasons at Chelsea and scored 45 goals in 172 matches for the club, many fans still labelled him F9 due to some of his poor form and way of missing great chances but Torres was still part of the team that won the UEFA champions league in Munich. He scored just only 20 league goals in 110 appearances for Chelsea before returning back to his youthful club.

Alvaro Morata

Alvaro Morata was another Spanish player who play for the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus before joining Chelsea 2017/2018 season and was handed the number 9 jersey. He scored 11 league goals in 31 matches in his first season, 2 goals in 6 FA Cup, 1 goal in 3 league cup matches and 1 goal in 7 appearances in the UEFA champions league all in his first season and that bring his total tally to 15 goals in 51 appearances. Though not too bad for a player who was just coming to the league but his second season was not really good at all due to lack of confidence in front of goal. Morata scored overall 9 goals 24 appearances for Chelsea before joining Atletico Madrid on loan

Some of the players who had also worn the number 9 jersey for the club goes thus; Kalud Boulahrouz, Steve Sidwell, Franco Di Santo, and Radamel Falcao.

Do you think Gonzalo Higuain can prove everyone wrong about the number 9 belief and erase every negative thought about the number?
