97 points are incredible, ... we didn't win it because there was Manchester City, ... we couldn't shake them off.

These words were some of the many words of Jurgen Klopp post-EPL seasons comments, in the wake of his side's narrow miss on the league title to Manchester City in an incredible title race the EPL had arguably ever had. Liverpool amassed a total of 97-league points but still came off short of the league title, the 3rd-highest top-flight point total in the English football history, beaten only by Manchester City's title-winning 100 points last season and this season's winning points of 98.

Amid all sorts of encouraging words showered on Liverpool from sports pundits and analysts, it was evident that Liverpool was disappointed and heartbroken for coming this close again after an amazing season-long performance. How could a team scored a staggering 97 points, loss just 1 match, had 21 clean sheets, conceded just 22-league goals(an ave of just 0.56 goals per match) but still did not win the league? Yet, the title winner City, conceded more goals(23), lesser clean sheet(20) and loses 4 matches, it's such a cruel title race, isn't it?

To think that Liverpool could have gone 7 points clear of City by end of January and things could have turned out differently made the title loss more upsetting. Liverpool led City with 4 points[Liverpool(60 pts), City(56 pts)] going into Matchday 24, City then lost 1-2 to Newcastle on a midweek fixture, sadly, Liverpool failed to capitalized on City's slip, they were held 1-1 by Leicester City at Anfield, and then, a string of draws, 1-1 against West Ham, 0-0 against Manchester United and a goalless stalemate against Everton meant Liverpool had dropped 6 damaging points by the end of March and as a result, dropped to 2nd place on the EPL log table with a point deficit, a point they never recovered.

Some of the other closest EPL title race or should I best loser since 1992/93(premiership era) includes;

2011-12 - MAN CITY(89 PTS), MAN UTD(89 PTS) GOAL DIFF

2009-10 - CHELSEA(86 PTS), MAN UTD(85 PTS)

2007-08 - MAN UTD(87 PTS), CHELSEA(85 PTS)

1998-99 - MAN UTD(79 PTS), ARSENAL(78 PTS)

1997-98 - ARSENAL(78 PTS), MAN UTD(77 PTS)

1994-95 - BLACKBURN ROVERS(89 PTS), MAN UTD(88 PTS)...

OPTA STATS shows that Liverpool became the;

• 1st team in top flight football to win as much as 30-league games and yet not win the title.

• 1st team to have lost a single match in a league season and still not win the title.

• Since the era of the premiership(1992/93), 97 points would have won all EPL title but 2, last season and this season.

The Heart-Breaker; Manchester City:

Liverpool was pipped to the title by Manchester City in an incredible fashion, winning 14-straight league matches to become a back-to-back champion. While many believe City's financial strength may have contributed to their successes, others disagree, and perhaps so, Manchester City's city rival, Manchester United did invest hugely, with the acquisition of Paul Pogba, Romalo Lukaku, Fred among a host of big money signings, but where did those signings lead them? almost nowhere. It takes a very good coach to make a group of superstars perform to their full potentials, down the years we've seen how Real Madrid 'Galacticos' under-performed without the right coach.

So, who is the Manchester City man that is responsible for this historic achievement? Pep Guardiola! The Spaniard strived where Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini couldn't, back-to-back title triumph. The numbers keep piling up for City as shown below, it only shows that last seasons numbers weren't a fluke. Guardiola's ideas and philosophies of how to play football were highlighted once again, he did it with Barcelona and Bayern Munich. His ability to boost players confidence is another of his quality, a prime and recent example is Raheem Sterling, Sterling has developed into one of EPL's danger man, winning the EPL's Football Writers Player of the year ahead of Virgil Van Dijk backed that.

Accolades have been showered on Guardiola from pundits from all quarters, including ex-Manchester United player, Gary Neville, coming from an ex-rival club could have made it sweeter.

Winning back-to-back title is about mentality, and he instilled that into that dressing room, ... He's powerful, strong and makes his players feel unbeatable. What a coach! - Neville

So, my inspirational words for dejected Liverpool comes in the words of a couple;

Efforts are never wasted even when it leads to disappointing results. For it always makes you stronger, more educated, and more experienced - Marc and Angel Chernoff.
