LFC Match Summary

Sandwiched between two of the biggest games of the season for Liverpool supporters in the form of Manchester United and Everton away, this game against Watford always felt like a must win for the Reds. This feeling was further heightened following the 0-0 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday, and the media were almost salivating at the thought of Liverpool "bottling' the Premier League title, seemingly ignoring the fact that the Reds have lost just 1 game in the competition all season and are up against Oil Money FC in the form of Manchester City. If this reaction comes across as bitter then you've read it right. I am sick to the back teeth of being told by peers and anonymous football 'banter' accounts on Twitter that Liverpool supporters would be unbearable if we won the Premier League. Having never been to watch their own team play, these individuals bask in the downfall of others rather than the glory of their own success. Would I become unbearable? Too right I would. I dread to think how many times I've seen the gif of Steven Gerrard slipping posted over the last few years. I'm hoping it's Liverpool's turn to land a sweet uppercut on the chin of banter accounts around the world. Lights out.

I'll be honest and admit that I was somewhat concerned at the inclusion of Origi in the starting 11 over both Shaqiri and Keita, the latter it was later revealed to have been suffering from a minor illness prior to the game. It's funny how things change in football. Only a few years ago, I was championing for Origi to have a starting place in the team. He was the complete package, albeit somewhat raw, but a horror tackle from Funes Mori set his season, and probably his career, on a different trajectory. Nonetheless, Origi will always be remembered at Liverpool for his last minute goal against Everton at Anfield earlier this season. What a moment. I haven't found anything else in life that compares to the exhilarating feeling of an important goal at Anfield, and that moment will be etched on my mind for the rest of my life. I needn't have worried about Origi being involved in this game as he played his role well and managed to get on the scoresheet. A job well done, and Klopp's decision to include him was fully justified.

Liverpool took to the field like champions tonight. This wasn't just an ordinary win but rather a team looking to put out a statement to the rest of the league. Watford are no pushover and are certainly worth their position of 7th in the Premier League table. Nonetheless, Klopp's team went out with a swagger and looked to put pressure on Watford from the first whistle. Mane had a torrid time at Old Trafford last weekend, following a run of 4 goals in 4 games, but he was back to his best here and that backheel goal was something the media would be talking about for weeks had it been scored by the likes of Ronaldo or Messi. Alexander-Arnold once again showed how talented he is at right-back, whipping in crosses that were begging to be met with a goal, and that's exactly what happened on a staggering three occasions. There wasn't a single poor performance in a Liverpool shirt last night but Fabinho and van Dijk, in particular, stood out as true leaders. The former has settled perfectly into this Liverpool midfield and is showing himself to be a peak Mascherano and Alonso moulded into one player at the moment. So much has already been said about van Dijk, but I think it's now time that people start to consider what he actually is; the best centre-back in world football.

The Final Word

Liverpool needed a win here and would have taken it in any form. The fact that the Reds went out and dismantled Watford with such style will give the team confidence going forward. There is another big test this weekend as Liverpool play local rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby. If the Reds can take 3 points there then the title charge is well and truly on.
