LFC Match Summary

Although Liverpool had a game in hand over Manchester City, and a chance to go back to the top of the Premier League with a win against Manchester United, it was always going to be a difficult task. Manchester United have been in fine form over the last couple of months and look a completely different team under Solskjær than they did under the guidance of Mourinho. Indeed, the Red Devils have been a much greater attacking threat, especially at Old Trafford, and this was something that worried me somewhat. I believe Liverpool have the better team on paper, however, and when the team sheet was released, I thought it was a great chance for Klopp and his team to go on and take 3 points away from home.

As has often been the case in this fixture over the years, the game became cagey rather quickly, and a number of injuries to both teams, especially Manchester United, completely eradicated any flow to the game. Although Liverpool managed to control possession and looked the better team throughout the first half, there wasn't really a feeling that they would go on to score. A combination of poor forward play and a great defending from Manchester United saw chances all but reduced to zero. Perhaps the most important moment throughout the entire game came about when Lingard was put through on goal to be denied by a wonderful challenge from Alisson. This is exactly why Liverpool went out and spent so much money to bring him to Anfield. Had Mignolet been in goal for this game then I believe Manchester United would have capitalised on that chance.

The second half saw a defiant Manchester United up their performance as the home crowd rallied behind their players. For all the huffing and puffing, however, neither team really looked like they were going to go on and win the game. In truth, a draw is probably a fair result here. Had Liverpool not dropped points to Leicester and West Ham then 1 point away at Old Trafford would have felt like a great result and this is something I have to keep reminding myself. Liverpool will be disappointed that they were unable to get the win that would have put a lot of pressure on Manchester City, but they do go back to the top of the league with this draw and that is something that Liverpool supporters can't really complain about at this stage in the season. Perhaps the most worrying aspects of this game were the performances of the Liverpool attacking players who, for the most part, looked to be lacking any form of creativity after Firmino was substituted. Secondly, Klopp's decision to bring Sturridge on as a replacement rather than Shaqiri, who scored 2 goals as a substitute against Manchester United at Anfield, was somewhat perplexing.

The Final Word

All things considered, I am relatively content with a draw away to Manchester United. Of course, a win would have sent out a huge statement but there are a lot of games left to play and it is still in Liverpool's hands. The most important thing for Klopp and his team now is to make sure they win at Anfield against Watford on Wednesday night and try to get a win at Goodison Park against Everton at the weekend. If the Reds can manage to do that then 7 points out of a possible 9 would look very good from that particularly difficult set of fixtures.
