Christian Cueva's missed penalty, which was awarded by the Video Assistant Referee, came back to haunt Peru as they lost 0-1 to Denmark on Saturday, the Daily Mail reports.

The World Cup Group C clash sprang into life when Denmark's Yussuf Poulsen brought down Cueva in the area just before half-time. After VAR deliberation, the midfielder stepped up but he blazed the ball over the bar from 12 yards.

Poulsen redeemed himself by scoring the winner in the 59th minute following a counter-attack to put Denmark level on points with France at the top of Group C.

'I have seen enough creativity to know that Peru will score goals, but it wasn't their day today. In front of goal they didn’t have that clinical edge and I’m not sure they really tested Schmeichel in the way they should have.

There might be tears in Peru tonight, but I also hope there is some pride and positivity in what their team can produce moving forward', former England international Jermaine Jenas commented for BBC.

Peru was quite impressive at times with Russian Champion Jefferson Farfan of Lokomotiv Moscow. But Kasper Schmeichel and constant misses spoilt the party for the Los Incas.
