Russian fairy tale at the home World Cup is over. Sbornaya did not manage to get over great Croatian team, although fought to the end, bringing the match to the penalties shootout.

Russia's Cheryshev scored an amazing opener before Kramaric equalized with a great header. On the whole the first half was for Croatia, but Russia proved they were not going to fall before the shot. It was not a surprise the match went to extra time. And in it the teams exchanged goals as well, both scored by defenders. Domagoj Vida was there to head the first after a sharp cross by Luka Modric. But with just five minutes to go Mario Fernandes netted an equally great Alan Dzagoev pass.

The shootout was the second in a row for both teams. And goalkeepers were great again. Both Akinfeyev and Subasic made saves, but Croatian took their shots better and went through to the semifinals where they will face England.
