Nepal have never reached to the final of the SAFF SUZUKI CUP , despite always being a contender for the title they have always managed to fumbled out of the tournament.
In 2011 , the team looked more composed and better under Graham Roberts it seemed no team int he South Asia can beat Nepal , they looked the best contender for the then SAFF Championship and performed at their best in the group stage.Having drawn with the Maldives in the opener and edge passed over Bangladesh in the second with that extraordinary goal from Sagar Thapa at 90+5' letting Nepal only have to draw against Pakistan to go into the semis as table toppers. In the semis Nepal faced the Afghanistan the emerging nations in the south asian football having only returned to football in 2003 after decades long civil war in the country .All the players from the Afghanistan were residing and playing some sort of semi-professional football in the various part of the europe. So, Nepal are favourites in the match as seen their performances in the past games as well in the group stages and unsurprisingly Nepal lead the attack batton against Afghanistan with barely giving them chances to create some play, Nepalese are on the hurry to seal the place in the final for the first time.Afghanistan managed to save their post till 90' while Nepalese were creating chances but never looked that good in the final third to finish and score a goal that lets them into the first ever final. But they never had that one despite they lost the game in the extra time with a solitary goal on the counter attack from Bilal Arzou at 103' and then Nepal never looked composed they were hopeless and frustrated with having more than 60% of possession but never looked to near scoring and finally they were crashed out of the tournament.
In 2013 , Nepal under the Danish-American Jack Stefanoski was favourite to win the title in the home conditions, having beaten Bangladesh in the operner 2-0 , drawn with Pakistan 1-1 with the stoppage time goal from, 15 years old debutant Bimal Magar and 2-1 victory over defending champions Nepal showed they are determind to lift their first ever international trophy in front of the home crowd.Again the semi finals was repeat of the 2011 editions , Nepal up against Afghanitan and India against the Maldives.Nepal this time conceeded unexpectedly at 12' as Kiran Chemjong fails to gather the ball and it was enought to crash Nepal out of the Semi-finals.But at the closing minutes Rohit Chand missed back-to -back penalties to ensure Nepal won't go through.
And in 2015, its worthless to talk about as Nepal was beaten by Srilanka 1-0 again the late goal and by India despite Nepal taking the lead in the 3' with the goal from Bimal Gharti Magar,4-1 was the final score and Nepal can't even qualify for the semis this time only scoring a goal.
And in 2018 ,it was bad start for Nepal after suffering 2-1 defeat at the hands of Pakistan who only returned to internatinal football only after 4 years of Ban from FIFA due to a political interferences in the P.F.F. Pakistan have physically better players and the most of the residing and playing in europe and one is born in England and have previously played for Fulham more than a decade. In the second game against Bhutan Nepal managed comprehensive victory of 4-0 putting them in the advantage of the goal difference that proved valuable as Nepal beat unbeaten Bangladesh that eventually crash tigers out of the tournament and led Nepal as group winners into the semis.
The lucky Maldives without even scoring a single goal have qualified for semis on the basis of toss and they looked slightly sloppy and it is the great chance for Nepal to create history not only by qualifying for the final but also winning the Cup.
