Penalty kicks are being missed and saved at a historically high rate at this year’s European Championship

When North Macedonia player Ezgjan Alioski and Ukraine opponent Ruslan Malinovskyi both failed to score from the spot in the second half of their game on Thursday, it meant that just 20% of Euro 2020 penalties had been scored thus far. The Euro 2020 strike rate is much lower than the 74 percent scored from all penalties granted at final tournament games since the first in 1960 through Euro 2016.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal versus Hungary has scored from the five penalties granted so far, but Alioski did follow up to knock in the rebound following Georgiy Bushchan's save. Ronaldo missed one of those penalties at Euro 2016, hitting the post in a 0-0 draw with Austria.
