Its International break, that no PL, Laliga, Champions League or anything. What can be more thrilling than my country Nepal is playing in this time of year. We, Nepalese rarely can see our national team playing. We just go out in first round of qualifier in both Asia Cup and World Cup. We hardly play 3 matches in International level in a year. SAFF Championship is one of the opportunities for us.

SAFF Championship stands for South Asian Football Federation. It is group that contains 8 countries in South Asia which are Nepal, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Bhutan and new addition Afghanistan. But Afghanistan is not taking part in this edition of SAFF football.

About SAFF Championship:

SAFF championship was started in 1993 to help to promote the football in South Asian region. This region is the weakest in terms of football and none of the nations in this region even come into top 100 in World ranking. The rank of the countries here is mostly below 100 but India recently is doing very well. They are now in 96, only country. 

This is 12th edition of SAFF football, and India is again dominant figure in it. India won it 7 times. Maldives Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan won it once previously. Nepal, Pakistan and Bhutan had never won it.

The participating 7 countries are divided into 2 groups. 

Group A

  1. Bangladesh
  2. Bhutan
  3. Nepal 
  4. Pakistan

Group B

  1. India
  2. Maldives
  3. Sri Lanka

Nepal vs Pakistan

The two countries with potential but failing to develop because of internal reasons. Both countries once was the contender of SAFF football but are deteriorating. They both played 6 times previously in SAFF football. Nepal won twice, lost twice and drew twice. Both team has never reached final before, nor won championship.
