Dopo le tante operazioni in entrata, perfezionate tra giugno e luglio, e le due cessioni eccellenti di Alisson e Nainggolan, si pensava che questa seconda parte del mercato sarebbe stata vissuta in sordina, utilizzata più che altro per sfoltire una rosa abbondante.
E invece Monchi aveva preparato un colpo ad effetto per mettere a posto l'ultimo tassello e provare a regalare a mister Di Francesco, un attaccante esterno di piede mancino che potesse essere congeniale al suo gioco e soprattutto al suo modulo preferito, il 4-3-3.
Un ruolo che nella scorsa stagione è rimasto senza un vero padrone, dopo la partenza di Momo Salah, destinazione Liverpool.
Una vera e propria maledizione, visto che già nella scorsa estate la stessa Roma era stata protagonista del tormentone Mahrez, erede designato per quel ruolo, ma mai arrivato a Trigoria per la resistenza strenuamente opposta dal Leicester.

Alla fine, vista l'impossibilità di arrivare all'algerino, si pensò di andare a prendere Patrick Schick dalla Sampdoria, per provare ad adattarlo sulla fascia destra, alternandolo con il giovane turco Cengiz Under.
Pur essendo questo l'acquisto più oneroso della storia del club, (42 milioni di euro totali tra prestito ed obbligo di riscatto) il giovane attaccante ceco vivrà una stagione tribolata, zeppa di infortuni e mai brillante. Con Under, non ancora pronto nella prima fase della stagione, la fascia destra diventa luogo di alternanza e di esperimenti.
Nel ruolo si sono alternati El Shaarawy, Florenzi, Perotti e persino Gerson.
Una mancanza di continuità che ha tolto qualcosa in termini di risultati, soprattutto in campionato.
E allora, memore di queste difficoltà il DS aveva provato a risolvere il problema una volta per tutte con Malcom, un top player o almeno un giocatore che ha tutti i numeri per diventarlo.
Adesso, però, la situazione è più difficile perché la Roma è venuta allo scoperto e molti club alzano i prezzi alle stelle, conoscendo l'esigenza di acquistare un certo tipo di giocatore, unita alla disponibilità del club, che per il brasiliano del Bordeaux era arrivata a mettere sul piatto 40 milioni di euro.
Bisogna anche che la società trovi il profilo giusto, per evitare di commettere lo stesso errore in cui è incappata lo scorso anno.
E quindi si è riaperta la caccia. Il profilo è sempre quello, un giovane giocatore di piede mancino in grado di saltare l'uomo e di inserirsi tagliando tra le maglie della difesa avversaria, o anche capace di inventare assist per i compagni di squadra.
