No doubt, Argentina has had a poor World Cup. Despite the presence of Lionel Messi, the team struggled in the group phase, where they lost 0-3 to Croatia and booked the Last 16 ticket with a great difficulty - so their 3-4 defeat against future champions France in the first knockout match was hardly surprising. The head coach Jorge Sampaoli seemed to lose control of his team, and there were rumours that it was not him but Lionel Messi who was the real boss and determined the line-up.

Now the Argentine journalist Ariel Senosiain of TyC Sports and Ole has revealed some new details in his book Mundial es Historias.

According to him, following the disastrous game with Croatia Messi and the veteran Javier Mascherano had an emergency meeting with Sampaoli and two of his assistants.

"We don't get what you say, we don't trust you anymore and we want to have an opinion," the players said.

Sampaoli asked what they wanted an opinion on, and Messi and Mascherano replied "on everything".

"So you guys are going to determine the line-up, to coach and to do all the rest yourselves?" Sampaoli asked.

"You asked me 10 times which players you wanted me to see on and which ones I didn't and I never gave you a name," Messi said.

Actually the Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia heard the dialogue, and he told Sampaoli to listen to the players.

After the World Cup, Sampaoli has already been sacked, so now Argentina is looking for a new coach.
