By beating Japan in an amazing match (3:2), Belgium completed the greatest comeback in the knockout round matches of the World Cup since 1970.

Belgium were down 2:0 early in the second half, but the goals by Jan Verthongen, Marouane Fellaini and Nacer Chadli completely turned the game around, helping the Red Devils to win.

Last time it was in 1970 that a team came back from two goals down to win a World Cup knockout round match. In the quarter-final of that tournament, West Germany were losing 0:2 to England, but drew level at the regular time before the famous Gerd Mueller scored the winner in an extra time.

Prior to that, such impressive comebacks were not something extraordinary, as they are now. In 1966, also in the quarter-final, Portugal were down 0:3 against North Korea, but came back to 5:3 thanks to Eusebio’s four goals.

And in the 1954 final match, Hungary scored two early goals against West Germany, but the Germans did not give up and ultimately sensationally celebrated a 3:2 victory.
