Match day 10 in the 2nd Bundesliga - a day on which the first three have left points out
The 1. FC Köln missed the chance to pull away and had to settle with a draw just like the 1. FC Union Berlin and the HSV. At least supporters at the Holstein Stadion in Kiel could cheer two goals when they battled the table toppers from Köln, the fans in the Bentler Arena in Paderborn and also in the prestigious Hamburg Volkspark Stadion were fobbed off with a not so much exciting nil-nil.
Union Berlin at least is the only team still undefeated in the 2nd Bundesliga and therefore had something to celebrate on this match day. On the way back from Paderborn to Berlin, which is now in fifth place in the table, there was certainly no place for misery. The series holds, and now they can prepare with for the next game against Dynamo Dresden. Next Sunday their stadium Alte Försterei will certainly be sold out again and on fire, this is one of the games of this season which the Köpenicker anticipated the most.
Köln, on the other hand, still luckily and happily holds on position one. If things continue as they were in the last two games, the big target of "Wiederaufstieg" can quickly be in danger. There seem to be enough other candidates who would like to displace the Kölner team from the best place under the sun. On Saturday a little they will need to show more, Heidenheim travels to the city at the Rhine with a small series of three games without defeat and sees itself in ascending form.
After the lame zero-goal play against Bochum, HSV has now even slipped out of the relegation ranks. No wonder, in the last five games they only won once. And if even the home games can't be won, then a rather unpleasant winter might be approaching the Norsemen as well. They still have everything in their own hands, but they really shouldn't allow themselves any more mistakes. The following game will not be a self runner, Magdeburg ranks 15th and they already feel the water rising up to their neck and they don't wont to be sucked in any deeper.
At least this match day welcomes a new, but well-known face in the top group. Greuther Fürth took advantage of the opportunity and passed by Union and Hamburg. The 3:2 in Bielefeld was the fourth game without defeat, so at the moment they are in the right form to whirl up the top even further. Next week in Darmstadt another three-pointer is also possible and if the Cologne team should fail again, even the top position is in reach.
So it remains exciting, especially since St. Pauli with a victory on Tuesday versus the second last in Duisburg could still advance to third place and also push Union out of the relegation ranks.
At the moment there are many candidates for the first three places and it is still a while until we see the "Herbstmeister" (= the team which stands at first place after the first half of the season) . So let's enjoy the coming weeks and see if there will be some chaff separated from the wheat before the winter break.
