Of course everyone will scream and claim to know the answer. That can and must be only one, Football!
But are you really sure?
Of course it always depends on who you ask and how you put the question. Stats can be turned around as you like, and the result is always different.
So let's ask in a more straightforward way:
Which sport do Germans like doing the most?
And here the picture looks quite different.
Cycling ranks first.
Of course, this environmentally friendly sport finds its fans especially in the drier seasons of the year, and Germans love to get on their bikes in their leisure time and jet through the country.
Fresh air and exercise offer a perfect combination of hobby and sport.
For young and old, and even for those with a small purse, this sport is the number 1 choice since you won't need much except your big to get yourself moving.
Whether you are the more competitive cyclist or you prefer to take it rather easier and cruise around the city or some nearby river, it is all up to you and an healthy alternative to our lives where we sit down in front of some screen for quite a large part of every day.
If the weather is good enough I also like to swap my car with my bike and cycle the way to work. It is not possible for all the places I have to go to, but twice in most weeks I have the chance to leave the car at home.
The next are sports such as gymnastics and aerobics, which often serve some health purpose too. Interesting to see is the proportion of women in this sport, which is disproportionately high.
Swimming and running are also classic exercise sports and are very popular with my country people. Swimming has the great advantage that it can be practiced all year round, whereby when running and jogging we often want to curse the summer heat and the wet and cold winter weather.
Among the most popular ball sports practiced by Germans are of course KING football and tennis. But especially in football we can see that the age group is quite limited and that most of the active people are between 10 and 30 years old. Since football is also quite injury-prone, this sport is exercised less and less when people get older.
And of course, table tennis should not be forgotten either.
This sport, popular with every age group, lives of course from the international success of the German players, who are always near the top of most competitions. Even though many players are organized in clubs, the number of leisure players is much higher.
A sport for men and women as well as for the old and the young, a "lifetime sport" that can be played forever.
I avoid throwing numbers and statistics around me, because numbers in this case would be sound and smoke and always change.
And one more thought about football:
Of course, the Football is the one and only and is king and has the most fans in the whole country. And even if the number of active players is not at the top, the fight for the round piece of leather still gets by far the most attention. In front of the TV and in the stadium, football is clearly number 1 and leaves all other sports far behind.
Also if you look at commercialization, football is by far the undisputed leader. Most money is generate and spend here, and no other sport comes even close. Bundesliga and national team are huge cash machines for the ones who are behind them and who have sold their souls quite a while ago.
At least one thing is still different compare to the other leading football nations in Europe. Clubs are not owned by some foreign investors who only see them as a business opportunities or hobby, and sell them off as soon as they get bored. There is still some down-to-earth feeling at many places, and some tradition which hasn't been sold yet. But the fans have to fight to protect their love and there is still lots of sweat and tears if you look closely.
Football is also unbeatable when it comes to sports betting in Germany. I am sure that football will also have an important say on the Scorum sports betting platform in the not so far anymore future. I'm quite curious and exited how the much-anticipated betting platform will things here on Scorum.
However, if you happen to visit my sporty home country some day, please don't be surprised to see all those cycling and running people all over the places. They might look a little rough and sweaty first, but don't be afraid.
They won't bite and they are actually quite lovely people!
