What's happening to the Glory Glory Manchester United #GGMU back in the days? This has been the question of every fan of the Red Devil for quite sometime now. Since Alex Ferguson gave up his managerial seat in May 2013, the team has never been the same. The Scottish manager left the team in a very good condition as he won the premier league using it as a settlement for the days together. However, there was this void left by his departure and the team has been dwindling into misery as fast as a cheetah. At the sack and appointment of every new coach since the days of Chapman, everything seems to be on the right track then boom!!! everything and everybody starts falling off the path...
The question remains, what is wrong and what measure can be taken to resurrect the sleeping lion?
Appointing a football Director:
The Glazers family has been quite easy on Woodward after he has failed to appoint a sporting director. Glazers are tolerating Woodward's shambolic running of the club because the Old Trafford giants will make money regardless of performances on field.
Notable names like Patrick Evra, Edwin Vandersar and Rio Ferdinand have all been considered for the job but all went down the drain for reasons unknown to the management. The team's executive vice chairman End Woodward has taken the mantle to be involved heavily in identifying and signing prominent targets but there's always need for a director of football who can be tasked as a middleman to streamline the whole process to avoid the scenario where it is left for the manager to select the playing staff. As it is known recently, coaching jobs are mostly perceived to be short term unlike the other that can be long term.
Lack of recruitment expertise.
Failure to observe, identify and select a suitable player option that matches the teams style of play has been another issue for the team..Just like an old team picture of the club I stubbled on while reviewing a friends status: he clearly made a statement "The club I joined" which mean he is as much as confused about what's going on. Observing the poor recruiting processes, the club will have to adopt an exquisite style of play then go for a matching player. Harry Maguire, Wan Bissaka and Daniel James are pretty good yet there was a loop hole when Manchester United failed to sign Bruno Fernandez who is known for his long range shot and set piece. That is a big hole to fill as the club lacks in such Area.
Since the days of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ji Sung Park, Dirmitr Berbatov, there have been no player that makes an opposing defence tremble when the ball is at their feet. Appointing and sacking too many coaches can bring down this plan as each coach would want to show class and introduce his preferable play. Stick to one and to good with it, let the other be a plan B.
Nonchalant attitude of players.
Jose Mourinho was a major parasite to this issue because of his off field mouthing and ego personalities with players. Paul Pogba known for his high shoulders never wants to be ordered around like a pizza boy. Such situation boils up disparity in a coach-player relationship as well as disturbs the psychological mentality between players.
Particularly, when a player needs either a raise in salary or wants to leave the club or is not just happy, they tend to behave unprofessional in a professional way.
The Manager.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær is a good man and deserves to be appreciated for his contribution as a player but giving him a permanent job looks like a scam to me. the management wants to hide in shame that they make decisions without considering the detriment of not getting prepared and acquainted with the necessary skills...so far the cash keeps building up.
He was appointed as a stop-gap, precisely because the season was lost and no high class coach was available to fill in for six months. The Norwegian is yet to give is a benefit of doubt that he is fit for the job. I believe as an interim, he gave positive results because the new manager vibe was bouncing and flowing all over but few games after he became permanent coach( after the 2-2 draw against Burnley in January) he has been under firing pressure. Nevertheless, there's always a perspective to handle situations like this. Alex Ferguson handled it in his time and would be in the best position to give a helping hand advice not me...lol.
In summary, the team needs to delegate duties just like Alex Chapman Ferguson did in his days even without an officially named Technical director, sporting director, director of football. There is only one way forward for serious clubs these days. They have to be able to answer these three questions: Who are we? What is it that we do? How are we going to achieve it? Woodward, on current evidence, can answer none of them.
Let's hope they don't get a damaging lose from Liverpool who they are up next with.
