You move to a new Stadium, you sell the old one to be developed into flats, how to make money in the meantime and clear the site for the builders?
Answer: Create a Hollywood B movie and blow the thing up!!
As a West Ham fan I was totally unaware a movie had been created from the demise of our old ground, the Boleyn in Upton Park in East London, the film was released on the 7th September and I had no clue about this film at all.
Starring ex WWE wrestler Dave Bautista and ex James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, the unlikely scenario is that ex-soldier Michael Knox (Bautista) must save 35,000 people from the hands of a group of heavily armed criminals who are out to obtain a large ransom.
Oh, I also forgot to mention that among the 35,000 is the daughter of Knox's fallen comrade, just to make things a bit more interesting for the viewer.
Also to suspend belief even further, more than it already has and given our recent dreadful start to the season, the film is set in a Universe where West Ham are competing in a European Cup semifinal, if you thought the film was far fetched, by this point you knew it was total fiction.
Not surprisingly the film hasn't made a big impact in the UK, I didn't even know about its release. It was only listening to the West Ham Fan TV radio show on CenterForce radio 88.3 FM in London, that I was made aware of this film at all.
It looks very much like the West Ham owners managed to accomplish two objectives, make some money and clear the site for development. The trailer for the film can be seen here.
Another clip shows the actors and directors talk a bit more about the movie and how the opportunity for the movie to be created came about.
This is not a movie I will be going out of my way to see, I may watch it when it comes round to being shown on terrestrial TV, I certainly won't be paying to watch it that's for sure.
I guess the chance to blow up a stadium and make a movie was a tempting proposition, do you think this is a likely scenario for other venues when they reach end of life? For Instance the old Wembley was used in the film Mike Basset England Manager, a very funny film if you haven't seen it.
