Once upon the time, long time ago there was competition called 'Cup of Champions' where only champions from all European countries participated. UEFA then decided to change format of competition to satisfy the richest clubs. Since then it was clear we are heading toward this. Day before yesterday 12 big European clubs announced new competition called "European Super League". Those clubs are: Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chesea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Inter and Milan.
As it looks now hook and hoe are up against it. Fans, pundits, governments, ex players etc... The most obvious example of those is ex Manchester United full back Garry Neville. He wants deduction of points for those clubs and claimed he'd rather watch game between champions of San Marino and Luxembourg than this new competition. It's all about money, end of football, rip football blah blah are what some fans are saying. But is it really like that ? Why this happened ? Who is really responsible for that happening ? I think it's UEFA and I'll try to explain you why.
First question is who is really greedy here ? Is it big clubs like Barcelona, Real, Manchester on edge of bankruptcy hard hit by covid crises or UEFA personal ? UEFA is taking 30% of revenue from all of its competitions for literally doing nothing! How that revenue comes to UEFA ? It comes from people watching the biggest clubs. People love to watch Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea etc... Guy from India can't sleep when Chelsea is not winning, guy from Nigeria is upset when Arsenal is not on winning ways, guy from Serbia is fuming on Mourinho's bad player managment in Spurs, guy from South Korea is not sleeping to be able to watch Son etc... Money comes from selling of lucrative TV rights because people love to watch big clubs.
What is happening with that money ? UEFA commission is deciding where that money goes. Who was on main position of that commission until recently ? Slavisa Kokeza from Serbia man who Serbian press accuse for stealing 640,000,000 from custom. UEFA said they can't influence who is appointed there from some countries. How did he come to that position ? Because of infamous Eastern European voting machine established in UEFA where insignificant countries for football like Moldova, Luthuania etc... have same voting rights like UK, Spain, Italy, Germany or France! How can it be ? It can! It's democracy !
Look at this example and where that leads. You might know there was once country called Yugoslavia. In 90ies it collapsed into 6 and now maybe even 7 independent states depends on how you look on Kosovo. They don't like each other much, but in football why not make some meeting and deal we will support our personel for UEFA ? Whoa now those 7 have 7 votes in UEFA and they are stronger than combined England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Belgium. Then they elect people like gentlemen mentioned above and then he decides where money from UEFA is going while Barcelona, Real and Manchester United sink into bankruptcy. Of course they will not allow that. It was just matter of time when this is going to happen.
I am not 100% fan of Super League and competition without deserving it on football field, but I am surely not crazy enough to say I'll rather watch San Marino - Luxemburg than Germany-England or France-Spain. I am sure if someone force Neville to watch San Marino - Luxemburg he'll ran away in some mining facility of Manchester to make some digging after 5 minutes. I am not also crazy enough like Slovenian lawyer Ceferin to think about next World Cup without players like Messi, Ronaldo, Harry Kane etc... What kind of World Cup would that be ? How did Qatar get that competition anyway ? Was there some corruption involved ? I am not also crazy enough to think that semi final of Champions League will not be possible because they will eliminate Real Madrid, Chesea and Manchester City!
We as football fans need to think what we love to watch more corrupted Eastern European prick full of money who doesn't know how to spend it and taking his friends to orgies with Caribbean handsome woman while Barcelona goes bankrupt or we would rather watch Messi, Benzema, Ronaldo, H. Kane, Auba, Bruno Fernandes, De Brune, Aguero etc... I'd rather like to watch last. If I like first I'll subscribe to porn channels. :)
Solution for this is not eliminating, threatening but patient negotiating. It can't go like this any more. UEFA need serious reform. Some kind of deal need to be done. Eastern European voting machine need to stop. Someone who generates most of the money need to have bigger control over it. UEFA must find a way to eliminate toxic political influence on football in some countries like one where I live. On other side unified competition where clubs deserve to play because good position on national table is the best solution. Super League gives 5 places through some kind of qualification so even some Eastern European club if it's good will have chance to qualify for it. Maybe national leagues should shrink toward 15 clubs to free calendar so this new competition can start. It's not that bad like some pundits are saying.
