Tottenham coach Antonio Conte did press conference before Everton game yesterday. He talked about Tottenham reality which last for 20 years, ups and downs and need for stability if club wants to compete for trophies. Antonio told it's not possible to fix that quickly because that fix need time and that this stability should come from the top. He also said there is no manger who can do it.
Coincidence or not period of 20 years is more and less period of ENIC and Daniel charge in Tottenham. Was it roll call for them or did he think about something else ? A lot of fans think ownership of ENIC is a problem. According to them lack of investment in squad and bad recruitment are main problems in this club and reason for lack of trophies in last few decades.
I can agree that there was period during which we didn't buy any player, but it was because building of new stadium and putting club on healthy legs. However we bought couple of expensive players in last year of Pochetino in charge. Ndombele and Lo Celso were heavily overpaid and I think it's fair to say they didn't perform in Spurs. That was example of bad recruitment. Couple of players are not performing for club for years and we didn't get rid of them on time.
Appointing of Fabio Paratici as sport director was made to address this and cleaning of squad finally started with departing of Ndombele, Lo Celso, Alli. That is good thing, but some of new players signed since summer were great miss. Look at Emerson Royal. He is big ignorant who can't do anything in front of goal or on wing position. I thought he can defend, but Boro game made me think otherwise... Why we sign him ? It's because we tried to bring Japanese player from Italy and negotiate it all summer just to let Arsenal grab him! Then we fall to choice lower on Paratici list and come to Royal and overpaid him. Same thing happen in January. We want Diaz negotiate with him all month until Liverpool came in and sign player. Then we fall to second on list Dejan Kulusevski... This is not how club which pretend to be called big should act!
When big club like Liverpool or Manchester United want someone they come and make serious offer and get player very fast. When Tottenham want player they come and offer half of required sum to club and then negotiate infinite about bonuses and things like that. Then other club comes and he's gone and we end up with someone lower on list usually 3rd or 4th choice. Do I need to tell that 3rd or 4th choice are usually worse than 1st choice. That's how we end up with worse players than big clubs and then expect wonders from manager. Then those bellow average players pull better players to their bellow average level and we get what we got now.
We don't have that money you might say. Wrong, Daniel and Joe have it, but don't want to spend on squad. They want young players they will sell later and earn and not experienced players with whom they can attack trophies.
Other direction is to think about players under radar not noticed by other clubs, players that does not cost much and bring them in squad. Unfortunately for that club need to have big and excellent network of scouts which it doesn't have at the moment. That need to improve.
That's all true, but this is not answer why Spurs are losing to clubs like Burnly or Middlesboro. Present squad is good enough to win those clubs, but they didn't perform. Conte should answer question why those downs happen always against on paper smaller clubs when majority of people think Spurs will win with ease ? What is root of problem ? Is it hard underestimating of opponent, inability to play against clubs which are defending and sitting deep ? If it's last thing he should answer us what's missing ? Why Winky can't pass on 8m distance to team mate on wing, but send ball in feet of Boro player and then let counter attack ? Why Son dribbles between 3, lose the ball on center and make counter attack instead of doing simple pass on time ? Why is Doherty missing empty net ? Why all that happens with players who work so hard on training ? Why Hobby is passing always back or wide ?
I believe they are work hard on training and my theory is that there is some outer influence in this club, some invisible force which activates every time when we are close to top 4 or when we play cup games. That influence is something club should deal with.
