I'm really keen to prevent Harry Kane from doing wrong move, which could cancel his legendary status in Tottenham, during this summer. That's why I want to write my view how I see real football legends. I watch football long enough to remember game between Chelsea and Liverpool and Steven Gerrard's ending of career. Despite I can assure you that Chelsea fans doesn't love Liverpool all Stamford Bridge sang cheering Liverpool song "Hey Gerrard Gerrard" about Steven Gerrard. One local Liverpool fan told me after "When you have such legend call me back".
Why did do they such thing ? Is it because he raised up Champions League Trophy in Istanbul or because they RESPECT him because he played entire his career for Liverpool ? I think it's the last one. Otherwise they would probably sing songs to Sheringham, Solskiaer or similar ordinary players...
Gerrard never won Premier League title, but he's legend. He's legend because he played ENTIRE his career for Liverpool. He will be life long legend not only for Liverpool fans, but for all football fans. I consider him for legend. Did he think to leave Liverpool ? Maybe he did at some points but he never did such thing. If he did it that would cancel his legendary status. 100 titles could not recover it after in eyes of fans.
I remember when Manchester fans at Old Trafford sing about Arsen Wenger in one of his last games. I know he was not entire life in Arsenal, but was enough long for coach. Did he won many trophies ? I wouldn't say so. There is example in Italy - Francesco Totti. He was entire career in Roma, didn't win title until he was 31 years old. Is he legend because he raised trophy in 31 when it's fair to say other players from Roma should have maybe more credits for ? No! He is legend because he played ENTIRE career in Roma and wiped his back with offers from other clubs.
Loyalty, passion, love toward club and fans that's what fans love. Would he be legend even if Roma didn't win title and if Italy didn't win World Cup ? I think he would! Trophies are nice, good to raise up but only players who played entire career in some club have special place in heart of fans. Why wouldn't Harry Kane be such legend in Tottenham ? Who can bet his arm he will not get any trophy in next 5-6 years ? I wouldn't dare.
There are other examples like Giggs from Man United, Maldini and Del Piero from Italy etc...
What would be right thing to do now to retain legendary status ? I'd step up and say publicly "I can't imagine myself raising up trophy in shirt other than Spurs!" That would be legendary even if you don't ever win anything which isn't going to happen. If you do so I can assure you that even Arsenal or Chelsea fans will sing and cheer you in your last career game against them. Imagine to bring Premier League Title trophy to Hotspur Way after 60 or how many years? Trophy brought on fair way against stronger heavier opponents like Manchester City brought by legend who played only for that club ? That would be romantic story like novels about medieval knights! Generations would tell their grand kids about it! That can still happen!
I think that would be better feeling than raising up trophy with strange unfair club like Manchester City where I might be able to raise it up too because they can play with 10 man and still win. This is special Hall of Fame where only few can enter! Just like Premier League all time scorers! You are still in game to be there! Don't make mistake! Don't ruin your legendary status!
Now Harry go get golden boot we all know you can!
