Real Madrid won 1-0 over Espanyol in the fifth week of La Liga 2018-2019, at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday (09/23/2018). Real Madrid's winning goal was scored by Marco Asensio.

Los Merengues got fierce opposition from Espanyol in the first round. Real Madrid had several chances to score through Casemiro and Marco Asensio, but the visitors reacted with the opportunity of Hernan Perez who almost tore Thibaut Courtois's goal.

Julen Lopetegui's new team could break into Espanyol's goal in the 41st minute. Asensio's left-footed shot into the far left corner of Diego Lopez could not be anticipated.

In the second half, the tempo of the game is no longer as soon as the first round. As a result, there were not many threats Real Madrid could give Espanyol's goal.

Asensio had given two threats but had not added to Real Madrid's advantage. On the contrary, Espanyol have a chance through Javi Lopez and Leo Baptistao, but can still be driven off the home defense.

This victory brought the Spanish capital team to the top of the La Liga standings with 13 points while shifting Barcelona who were previously in that position. Meanwhile, this defeat made Espanyol only collected seven points and finished sixth.
