Manchester United were dumped out of the Europa League last night following a disappointing loss to Sevilla. With this result, United have gone 3 years without a trophy. Which begs the question, what’s actually going wrong at Manchester United? From challenging Real Madrid & Barcelona to getting knocked out by Sevilla.

1. Recruitment

Harry Maguire signs for a world record fee of 80 million pounds for a defender.

Since Alex Ferguson retired, the team has spent huge amounts of money to attract big players. However, these “big money signings” have failed to live up to their price tag. Similarly, United have failed to release players not playing up to their potential which is hampering their progress. This is one of the issues which need to be ironed out before its too late.

2. Wage Bills

Currently, Manchester United have one of the largest wage bills in the world. Players like Paul Pogba, David de Gea and Alexis Sanchez are having contracts worth £350 thousand which is massively affecting the financial side of the club. The club spends huge amount of wage money to attract players yet fails to deliver on the pitch.

3. The Board

Share prices have risen by a third in just three months despite poor performances.

Under Ed Woodward, Manchester United generated more revenue (£627.1 million) than any other English club last season. Even though the financial side is going quite well, United have only finished twice in the top four since 2013. Investments made have not been up to the mark which has led to a feeling of hate among the fans. After the 2-0 loss to Burnley, chants of getting rid of Woodward and the Glazers were heard.

4. Incompetent Managers

David Moyes lasted only 11 months as manager of Manchester United

Under Alex Ferguson, United were known for playing an exciting brand of football. Currently, the team aren’t able to penetrate defences of teams like Newcastle and Burnley which is embarrassing for a top-tier club. The team needs a proper experienced manager and through him, establish proper attacking football.

5. Dressing Room Culture

Manchester United are lacking a proper leader to inspire as well as influence the team on and off the pitch. Under Ferguson, the team had established leaders such as Ferdinand, Neville, Vidic, Giggs and Scholes. Currently the team is led by Harry Maguire who in comparison lacks proper leadership.

6. Impatience towards Immediate Success

United are currently in a position where everyone expects the club to win silverware and challenge for the Premier League title each season. However, currently the team needs to rebuild right from the beginning to come back as a dominating team they once were. This process should take a minimum of atleast 3 to 5 years. Fans need to understand this and have faith in the club. Teams like AC Milan & Barcelona are also in a similar position and will require a few years to get back to where they were.
