In addition to football, I feel a great passion for cinema. I consider myself very critical and selective when it comes to watching movies. Obviously my passion for sports could not be left aside even in this aspect, so one of my favorite genres are sports-themed movies based on real life. On future occasions I will talk about some of my favorites; but for now we will highlight the worst sports film in history: United Passions.
Remember those Nazi propaganda films that Hitler ordered to tell the story at his convenience and praising the figure of Nazi Germany? Well, this movie would be modern equivalence and football as "protagonist". United Passions is a 2014 film that almost completely financed FIFA and makes a terrible attempt to try to tell the story of FIFA as seen from its Presidents throughout history.
I had already heard about this movie a couple of years ago, until a few months ago I was able to see it on a cable channel that transmitted it as part of a World Cup special. I can say categorically that it is 110 minutes of cinematic garbage. It should not even be called "film", it's 110 minutes of propaganda lies. Well, what could we expect if FIFA financed the film, one of the most corrupt organizations back then?
Moreover, to say that it tells the story of the presidents of the organization is to speak only of the first 30 minutes: it is an autobiographical film that exalts and praises the figure of Joseph Blatter, the most corrupt sports leader in history. They say that history is written by the winners; Well, Blatter thought he was a winner and tried to write the story through this movie.
FIFA tried to wash its stained image and vindicate itself with this film, painting the organization and its leaders as irreproachable and incorruptible. But, this is where you see Blatter's hand in this whole affair. The shadows of bribery in FIFA's history are so great that it was simply impossible not to mention them. But here is the trick: Blatter planned everything and only see the corrupt acts that took place before his administration. In the film there are clear allusions to documented historical bribes, how the selection of Uruguay as headquarters in 1930 or the purchase of votes of Joao Havelange and his African friends.
But Blatter ... Blatter is a saint (according to him). In the film he is projected as the hero, the creator of modern football and responsible for saving sport, a character worthy of being beatified. According to what is shown on the screen, Blatter was in charge of doing all the dirty work of Havelange, while his boss relaxed and enjoyed all his luxuries. There is such a surreal scene in which Blatter meets the Adidas owner that I just can not help laughing at the memory. In it a tired Blatter is seen, and when Horst Dassler tells him that he sees him exhausted, Blatter heroically replies that "he will not rest until a World Cup is played in Africa and all the women in the world can play football". All this while in the background African children play soccer with Adidas uniforms and drinking Coca-Cola, in a blatant advertising nod to the two most loyal FIFA sponsors. And later on, he sees himself as Blatter, already FIFA president, threatening the entire executive committee with being punished if they are involved in illicit situations. That was the moment where I had to turn off the TV because I could not stand the laughter.
Well, a movie based on real life made based on blatant lies could not turn out well. And so it was, United Passions was a resounding failure at the box office. So bad was that the specialized website Rotten Tomatoes gave it a historic 0/100. In fact, it is the worst debut of a movie at the North American box office to raise a measly $918. The movie lost around 25 million dollars, a nonsense compared to everything Blatter stole. Of course, it did not help that the days of its release exploded all the scandal in FIFA that ended with the resignation of Blatter.
When I see this movie I can not help but laugh, it's more of a fiction comedy for me. However, I also get angry because FIFA tried to see us face, believed that football fans are stupid and can shape our opinion at your convenience. But the reality is that this movie was Blatter's death sentence. These 110 minutes of propaganda trash will be a reminder not to fall into the mistakes of the past and as a faithful testimony that even the most brazen corrupt ends up always seeing their faces with justice, especially if their business is to play with illusions, dreams and the passion of billions of people. To say that United Passions is the worst sports movie in history is to fall short; Because of its unlikely story, forced dialogues and the impudence with which it was made, I can safely say that it is the worst cinematographic garbage in the history of mankind.
