The life of a soccer woman is not only glitter and glamor. Lizzy Cundy, married to former Premier League-player Jason Cundy between 1994 and 2012, certainly thinks so. That says the 49-year-old British in a conversation with tabloid newspaper The Sun. From being spewed, players going to bed with each other's wives or Christmas parties without family: Cundy all experienced it during her period as WAG (wives and girlfriends, ed.).

The book "Tales From The Red Carpet" will be published at the end of May. Model and television personality Lizzy Cundy states, among other things, that her marriage to the ex-defender of, among others, Chelsea, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Ipswich and Portsmouth was not always cheerful during his career. Despite the flashy cars, expensive trips or cupboards of villas, Cundy was more unhappy than happy during her period as a WAG.

"Football players in the Premier League earn huge amounts of money at a young age," says Cundy. “The lives of the women of those football players naturally look glamorous to outsiders, but I can confirm that this is certainly not always the case. Football teams consist of players from different regions of the country or even often from other countries. They spend a lot of time together, also next to the field and that - certainly in the period I experienced - resulted in many affairs. I know many football players who have ever slept with the women of their team mates. Fortunately I have not experienced it, but it is worrying how often it happens. "

Cundy also indicates that a football woman must be especially prepared to make a lot of sacrifices. “What you eat as a football woman is tailored to the diet that your husband must follow. His fitness and training schedules are sacred. And certainly in the Christmas period. “Celebrating Christmas is actually out of the question. The most important matches are played on Boxing Day (Boxing Day, ed.) And if your husband then plays on the move, he must leave on seclusion on Christmas Day. So you have to plan the presents and the Christmas meal earlier. Alcohol is not allowed and he cannot invite many people, because he must be given the opportunity to prepare for the match in peace. Christmas was therefore not really a family affair for us and it was particularly difficult for the children. ”

Cundy and her children also regularly fell victim to the (sporting) choices of her ex-husband. She experienced this firsthand after the defender made the sensitive switch from Chelsea to fellow townsman Tottenham. “The police then had to guide me through the stadium, because I was spewed by a supporter, among others. Others scolded me. Fortunately my son, who was there at the time, did not yet understand those mean words. If I had a daughter, I wouldn't like it so much if she brought a soccer player home. "

Kat Kerkhofs, the wife of Dries Mertens, already showed that it is possible to build a career yourself as the wife of a star soccer player. But, of course, that is by no means according to Cundy. “As the other half of a football player, you actually sign a commitment to look after him full-time. The woman also has to take care of your children, so there is little time left to build up her own career. I would not recommend it to anyone. "
