Founding year

The founding of the RB Leipzig was a little different than that of the large traditional clubs in Germany. Red Bull GmbH first had the plan, similar to SV Austria Salzburg, to take over a larger German club and then to convert it to the model of Red Bull Salzburg. For this the clubs FC St. Pauli, TSV 1860 Munich and Fortuna Düsseldorf were contacted. In order for Red Bull to invest in these clubs, however, the club colors and the club name should be changed according to the Salzburg model, but this was rejected by the clubs mentioned. Besides Red Bull wanted to acquire the majority with 50+1 at the associations, which contradicts again the 50+1 rule of the DFL.

Red Bull pursued thereupon the plan the insolvent FC Saxonia Leipzig to take over. This failed however at fan protests and at an objection of the DFL because of name-legal discrepancies.

Since clubs in lower leagues are no longer subject to the DFL licensing procedure, the independent club RB Leipzig was founded on 19 May 2009. The first goal of the newly founded club was to take over the right to start of the SSV Markranstädt from the upper league Saxony and additionally their men's teams. Since a naming for advertising purposes was not possible because of the DFL statutes, the new club instead of Red Bull Leipzig was briefly called RB Leipzig. When the play enterprise began the RB Leipzig was only once without association coat of arms at the start, since the federation rejected the coat of arms proposed by the association since it had to large similarity with the Red Bull enterprise Logo. On the jerseys is however nevertheless the Red Bull Logo as sponsor Logo.

Thus the term "bulls" or "red bulls" is often used. Among the fans of other traditional clubs, the term "Brauseklub" is often disparaging, which is an allusion to Red Bull's main product. The term "drawing board club" is also used more often, which is an allusion to the concept behind it, where it is less about club life itself but more about marketing the Red Bull brand.

The success lies rather in their way from the Oberliga Saxony to the Bundesliga and cup victories which are more regional nature. Internationally, there are participations in the Champions League and Europa League.

Failures

General information

From a sporting point of view, the bend at RB Leipzig in recent years showed upward, which was also a merit of Ralf Rangnick. Starting next season, Julian Nagelsmann will lead the professional team as head coach. Rangnick ends his engagement at RB Leipzig and takes over the position of Chief Coordinator Football in the Red Bull Empire.
