Markus Weinzierl has been the new head coach of the Swabian Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart since 9 October. After his positions at SSV Regensburg in the 2nd Bundesliga and further positions at FC Augsburg and FC Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga, VfB is now his 4th coach position in paid football.

With SSV Jahn Regensburg in 2012, he made it into the 2nd Bundesliga. In the same year he started as head coach of the FC Augsburg with the objective to reach the class retention in the Bundesliga with the FCA. The start in Augsburg was at first bumpy and Weinzierl won with FCA only nine points in the preliminary round, but in the second round 2013 with his team could reach the class retention.

In the following Bundesliga season Markus Weinzierl developed the FCA team further and reached the eighth place in the Bundesliga table at the end of the season. Following this season, Weinzierl was voted the best coach of the season.

The FC Augsburg with Markus Weinzierl as coach increased in the season 2014/2015 again and reached at the end of the season the fifth table place in the Bundesliga, which meant the participation in the Europa League and thus the biggest club success until then.

In the 2016/2017 season Markus Weinzierl joined FC Schalke 04 as head coach. After a mixed season with the squires and a 10th place in the table, Weinzierl was given a leave of absence by FC Schalke 04 at the end of the 2017 season.

Markus Weinzierl failed on Schalke due to the high expectations that prevail there. FC Schalke 04 has to take part in the European competitions, according to the instructions there. Markus Weinzierl proved that he can develop a team at FC Augsburg, but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to celebrate quick successes.

In general, it is difficult for a new coach who encounters an existing squad to immediately enforce his own game philosophy. To achieve this, a coach needs player types that work the way the coach wants them to.

On Schalke Weinzierl met a given squad, on which he had no great influence. Reaching 10th place with this squad is not a bad result.

In Stuttgart, Weinzierl will again meet a squad that he did not put together himself. It remains to be seen whether quick results can be expected there, but which VfB urgently needs.

With Daniel Didavi from VfL Wolfsburg and Gonzalo Castro from BVB, the VfB squad was strengthened, at least by name, at the beginning of the season.

VfB goalkeeper Ron Robert Zieler is a national team goalkeeper and in the defence, Holger Badstuber and the French world champion Benjamin Pavard are also very good players in their own ranks.

You will see in the next games whether Markus Weinzierl can work with the VfB players and they can implement the ideas and tactics of the new coach.

I think Markus Weinzierl will bring VfB forward again.
