Many of us know that this is a very controversial thing to disclose to the public, especially in the football world. It doesn't sound well for a player to disclose homosexuality in football due to the fear losing sponsors or being backlashed by fans or fellow players 

The following footballers are said to have opened up in public not minding its effects on their career. 

  1. Justin Fashanu

He was a former English footballer born on 19 February, 1961. He played for England teams like Southampton, Norwich, Manchester City and many more before he finally retired. He was the first professional footballer who boldly told the press he was a gay. When he announced his homosexuality in 1990, a lot of controversies ensued which really affected his career. He suffered bully by both fans and his fellow players after which committed suicide 8 years later in 1998

2. Liam Davis

Liam Davis is an English professional footballer born on 23rd November, 1986. He played for many English clubs like Coventry City, Peterborough, Northampton Town and Oxford United. David had secretly opened up to his friends that he's been a gay since age 18 before finally disclosing it in public in 2014.

According to David, he said knew he was going to suffer backlash from fans and his fellow players won't be moved by that. He said he believes that there are more than 20 professional footballers with the same status but won't be able to disclose it due to fear. 

3. Thomas Hitzlsperger

Thomas Hitzlsperger is a former German midfielder born on 5 April, 1982. He spent part of his career playing for Aston Villa before he was sold to Stuggart where he won Bundesliga in 2007. Thomas Hitzlsperger has become one of the most high-profile footballer to publicly announce being a gay. Thomas said he never regretted or ashamed of it, hence, he had to come out making his announcement in protest against anti-gay propaganda" laws in Russia 

Thomas retired from football five years ago at age 31 due to injury
