Some weird and wonderful things have happened (and are still happening during football matches) that have stopped a match. The commonest one many of us are familiar with is when fans invade the pitch but there are other scenes that are either unwelcomed or unexpected that have happened on the pitch which some of us don’t know.

So what are the ridiculous things that have stopped a game?

6. Everton fan Handcuffs himself to a goal post

This is one of the memorable things that have happened in English Premier League. During a home match between Everton and Manchester City, Everton was thrashing Manchester City 1-0 five minutes to the end of the first half when a fan ran into the pitch. Before the security guards could stop him, he ran towards the goal post and handcuffed himself to one of the goal posts. The fan was said to be protesting against his daughter’s unfair dismissal from the low-cost airline. He was able to manage the proceeding for more than five minutes before he was eventually bundled out of the pitch.

5. Black cat invaded the field

It’s a myth that black cat are sources of bad luck and there have been many occasions over the last few years a cat has invaded the pitch and it really becomes a funny sight when the players have no choice but to attempt to get them off.

During a match between Groningen and Heracles in 2013, a feline trundled on the surface and interrupted the game. The referee had no choice but to stop the match as both teams were waiting for the cat to deport for the game to continue. This created a sideshow for some minutes but the cat was eventually caught. A big thumb up to the person that caught the cat.

4. Dog

Just like the cat, we’ve also seen many dog pitch invasions. One time this happened was when a husky legged it onto the pitch during Crewe Alexandra’s game with Brentford in 2014.

3. Chicken

The first question that should be running through your mind is, “how the hell did a chicken get inside the stadium?”. In English Premier League, there was a sideshow when a disgruntled Backburn fan released a chicken on the pitch to cause distraction. The reason behind this was to protest against Venkys owner who accumulated their wealth by selling poultry. The disgruntled dress the chicken up with the club crest. The chicken gave the security a runaround before it was eventually caught. What a funny way to protest.

2. Pitch invader at the Tottenham Hotspur v Partizan Belgrade game takes photos with Tottenham players

This is also a hilarious sideshow that happened during an Europa Leagues match between Spurs and PArtizan Belgade . Three fans invaded the pitch and created a scene by running around the pitch which suspended the match for about 42 minutes. The three fans ran were seen running around before they finally took selfie with three Tottenham players who didn’t look pleased about it.. They were eventually bundled out of the pitch even though the match was stopped for more than 10 minutes by confused Ukrainian referee yevgen Aranovsky

1. Penalty Spot Paint

Another funny scenario that has stopped a match happened way back in 1977 during a match between Manchester City and Derby County. Back in those days, football pitches had no manicured bowling green lawns like we have in pitches today. The penalty spot disappeared due to muddy condition.

When Derby County was awarded a penalty, no one knew where to place the ball- not the player or referee. The match was stopped for some minutes and they had to call someone to paint the stop back again.

Thank you and have a nice day 😎
