Gareth Southgate has his work cut out after his side received another major blow ahead of their World Cup qualifiers. According to reports making the rounds, English playmaker Declan Rice has dropped out of the Three Lions squad after falling ill. Although no reports on what was exactly wrong with Rice, however, the situation seems to be a serious one.

Previous medical issues for Southgate's lads

Aside from Declan Rice, Gareth Southgate still had another major omission in midfield. Chelsea youngster Mason Mount would most probably be absent from the squad as well. On his part, Mount just concluded a dental surgery that could reportedly keep him out of action for two weeks. With the absence of Mount, Rice's withdrawal from the squad would bow pose a big obstacle to Gareth Southgate's plans. As but players were regular starters for Southgate.


Rice heads back to the Hammers

After confirming his illness, Rice has headed back to West Ham in other to complete his recovery process. Previously, himself and Mount were almost certain that they would start the game against Albania. However, unforeseen occurrences have not proved to be their friends.

Final thoughts

The Three Lions side would be desperate to defeat Albania as that would all but grant their tickets to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Hence, they would have been needing all the squad depth they could get. However, in the absence of these key names, it would be interesting to see how the English side faces off against the Albanians.
