Newcastle United's next transfer target is Matt Targett from Aston Villa on loan with the 26 year-old left back or left wing-back keen to join Eddie Howe's men after being made surplus to requirements at Villa Park after Steven Gerrard signed Lucas Digne.

An agreement has now been reached for a loan until the end of the season with an option to buy and a medical taking place right now,

Eddie Howe has secured a left-back, in what has been a problem position for Newcastle this season with a majority of goals being conceded down that side of the pitch.

Targett had been a virtual constant in the Villa side for the last two Premier League seasons making 38 appearances in 2020/21 and 28 in 2019/20 but lost his place this year even before the arrival of Digne and has played only twice in 2021/2.

After agreeing a fee of £13M for Dan Burn, Howe is looking for left-sided defensive cover despite having Jamaal Lewis and Paul Dummett on the books and Targett will likely be one of several arrivals on Newcastle's busiest transfer deadline day ever.

More to follow as the story develops amid reports that Newcastle are readying a new bid for Reims striker Hugo Ekitike to sign the exciting forward before the window shuts.
