I understand this space has been flooded with different reviews and emotions regarding last night game between Athletico Madrid and Chelsea. As a die-hard Chelsea fan who does not only glorify himself in their wins but also bury his head and be sober in the woes, I simply cannot help but air my views on that game.

You see, champions league round of 16 had been a psychological stage for Chelsea in recent years. It has always been a critical stage where the team have to struggle to match up but eventually bows out in defeat. Even though the squad was complete for Chelsea, it still wasn't clear what may be the outcome of the game except for fate.

Uncertain about the event of the game, Chelsea was head over hill against a formidable side, Athetico Madrid. Athletico is leading the table in La liga with three points. That the game will be played in their home gave them more advantage over Chelsea.

However, the end of the game saw Chelsea securing a crucial win and a better position against their opponent in the first half of round of 16. Though, Athletico was the better side in tacticality and what a view, the absent of key members of the team such as Jose Giminez, Hector Herrera and Yannick Carrasco that were ruled out contributed to their short coming.

It is a known fact, that Diego Simone has never lost a champions league game at home before. It was in view of this that Athletico could have shown their strength. However, due to covid-19 travel restriction in Spain against travelers from United Kingdom, the game was played in Bucharest. Perhaps this was Chelsea's lucky day we wouldn't know, but the game would have certainly be different had it been played in Athletico Madrid's home even if the result remains the same.

I couldn't be more happy for Thomas Tuchel and the Chelsea team and fan base. This is an opportunity to break out of the psychological round of 16 game. The second leg is expected to hold on 17th March at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea must continue their impressive run, seal the game and move on to the quarter finals.

Olivier Giruod's goal against Athletico was not only necessary to secure a very important win for Chelsea but it's also sensational and remains my best champions league goal of the season.
