This is a very huge question that doesn't seem to have a solution.
I remember writing a post on how to stop racism in football. I recommended heavy fines on the offenders. Well, that is only possible for those you can see. You can easily identify the individual either in the stand or elsewhere and impose heavy fine on the person.
There is a new trend now. The abuses are now in social media. That is the new trend now. They now target the players on social media with Twitter being the most common.
Tammy Abraham, Paul Pogba, and Yakou Meite are the latest players to suffer racist abuse on social media. This is not offline now and it's difficult to track this users.
I have couple of twitter accounts registered for different uses and I believe it's more like the same everywhere. This means the abuser can choose any account to use. He will expect the worst scenario which is twitter blocking his account. There is no fine, no stadium ban, no community service. The abuser can still use another account to abuse these players.
It's sad. These players lost penalties that anyone could lose. Messi, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic have all lost crucial penalties in the past. The fans should know that players are humans too and are bound to make mistakes.
I don't know what measure twitter is going to take, but I believe they should respond well this time. Many have been calling for a verification process for all accounts and it seems they might be considering that. This will make it easy for them to pinpoint the users behind those accounts.
What do you think can be done to stop racism in football?
