Atletico Madrid move closer to La Liga title after win against Sociedad
Atletico Madrid edged Real Sociedad 2-1 at Wanda Metropolitano to move further close to their first La Liga title since 2014. Yannick Carrasco put the leaders in front in the 16th minute when he collected Marcos Llorente's ball over the top of the Sociedad defence and did an excellent job to send it past Sociedad keeper Alex Remiro. Angel Correa made it 2-0 after ten minutes with a superb finish assisted by an excellent through ball from Luis Suarez. Igor Zubeldia found a late consolation goal for Sociedad, but the capital side hung on to win the crucial match in their build-up to the penultimate game in the Spanish top flight. With the hard-fought victory, Los Rojiblancos can now clinch the Spanish title for the 11th time in their history and for the second time under Diego Simeone if they win both their remaining fixtures. On Sunday, 16 May, they will take on 11th placed Osasuna at home before winding up the domestic campaign a week later against relegation-threatened Real Valladolid, who sit in 18th place. Currently, Atletico are four points clear of second-placed Barcelona, who threw away their 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 against Levante on Tuesday. At the same time, third-placed Real Madrid, with a game in hand against mid-table Granada on Thursday, poses a greater challenge to their title charge. If Atletico drop points in the upcoming matches and Zinedine Zidane's Real win all three games, they can claim the league based on a head to head advantage. Simeone was understandably delighted with the character and determination his side showed to avoid a late draw against Sociedad as he celebrated the victory by running down the tunnel. The boss, who was nervous with the tense final minutes of the game, said his team wants some rest. "We need to rest. It is a very tough season, and it will end up being very tough. It started too quickly, and it is happening to all teams; we are not the exception. We continue game by game. knowing that Sunday will be a crucial game. " The Spaniard said to Marca.
