Building The Ultimate Underrated XI(2019-20).
The very reason of classifying a player as an 'underrated' footballer is that they don't get enough credit for their influence on the pitch. There are always players who might be deemed underrated by a majority of fans. Perhaps, these players are under the shadow of their flashier teammates or they might be playing in a league they're just too good for. This is my pick of 11 players in every position who deserve more plaudits than they receive. Goalkeeper - Keylor Navas. The Costa Rican played a very important role in all of Real Madrid's Champion's League triumphs. His cat-like reflexes and the ability to keep his composure in big games helped him be the undisputed no.1 at Madrid. Many thought that the signing of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea would cast the end of his spell at Madrid, but he started 10 league matches in his last season before being shipped of to PSG. Even at the age of 33, Navas has started 21 games this season managing to keep 11 clean sheets. Right Back - Ricardo Perreira. Ricardo Perreira signed for Leicester City in the summer of 2018 for a staggering fee of €22 Million. Since then, Perreira has proven time and time again that price was an absolute bargain. This season he's made more tackles than any other player. He is a modern day full back with offensive capabilities. His 3 goals and 2 assists this season prove that. Centre Back - Aymeric Laporte. Laporte is a very talented and classy defender, making him a perfect fit at Pep's City. He is a very stylish, left-footed centre back who is comfortable with the ball. He is commanding and has a clever reading of the game. Laporte's first season at City was overshadowed by the hype surrounding Van Dijk. But, he's still undeniably one of the most talented defenders to play the game. Centre Back - Francesco Acerbi. Francesco Acerbi has been phenomenal this season for Lazio, he has started 24 games this season and has 4 goal involvements. He is a tall left-footed defender and has exceptional ball playing abilities. He plays in the heart of the defence. He is one of the reasons Lazio have conceded the least amount of goals in Serie A this season. Acerbi has been an integral part of Lazio's fantastic run in Serie A this season. Left Back - Lucas Digne. Lucas Digne has experience playing for the likes of european giants like PSG, Roma and Barcelona. He pursued a move to Everton after being frustrated by the lack of game time at Barcelona. The Frenchman has 5 assists to his name this season. He is confident going forward and is has the pace and stamina to run up and down the flank. His consistent performances have made him a reliable and indispensable figure at Everton. Defensive Midfielder - Fernandinho. Fernandinho has been an integral part of City's consecutive title wins. His strong build and defensive capabilities matched with his elite passing range makes him the most complete defensive midfielder in the game. He breaks up opposition plays very frequently and dictates the play with his ball playing abilities. He has been deployed as a Centre Back this season showing just how versatile of a player he is. Centre Midfielder - Dani Parejo. Dani Parejo is the most criminally underrated playmakers in all of Europe. His pinpoint passing and composure while on the ball is what makes him so good. It is almost as if he was genetically engineered for the Spanish game. Parejo is consistent and reliable. He almost never has a bad game. His stats are very impressive considering he plays for a team like Valencia. Centre Midfielder - Thiago Alcantara. Thiago was the only player to follow Pep Guardiola to Bayern. He is a versatile player with great technique. Thiago can play as an attacking midfielder or a box to box with ease. He makes precise passes frequently and dictates the game. He has been consistently putting up performances for Bayern. Attacker - Josep Illicic. Josep Illicic could be called a "late-bloomer". He's been in the news after scoring 4 past Valencia in a single knockout game. He has played as an attacking midfielder or on the right of a front two. He has been one of the reasons Atalanta has been punching above their weight for the past two seasons. Attacker - Raul Jimenez. Jimenez joined Wolves in the summer of 2018. He scored 17 goals in his debut season after becoming a regular starter. Jimenez is one of the most complete forwards in the Premier League. He has played on the left wing and as a striker. He is a decent dribbler and can score from his right, left or even a header. The Mexican doesn't shy away from scoring in big games either. He is a hit among the PL fantasy fanatics. Striker - Yussuf Poulsen. Poulsen might not be the most technically gifted footballers but he is strong and surprisingly quick . He has bagged 5 goals and further assisted 6 in 12 starts for Leipzig. He started his career as a defender but eventually became a Striker. His contribution in Leipzig's ruthless season is shadowed by Werner's excellence. But, he is the reason Werner has been in the form of his life. His pace, physicality and his ability to make other's around him play better make him an outstanding Target Man. He is an absolute bully and strikes fear in the mind's of defenders.
