LFC Final Word: Liverpool vs Bayern Munich
Welcome to the LFC Final Word. In this series, I provide an in-depth analysis of games from a Liverpool supporter's perspective. Match Facts Liverpool vs Bayern Munich Anfield Tuesday 19th February, 20:00 Result Liverpool 0 - 0 Bayern Munich Match Summary This Champions League fixture was always going to be a slightly strange one for Liverpool supporters. Although we'd all love to go on and win the competition, the focus is on the Premier League this season and there is a feeling that extra games are the last thing Liverpool need. Nonetheless, I'd love to see the Reds do well in both competitions and am glad that Klopp put out a strong side in this first leg. Thinking about the final score, first and foremost, this is actually a pretty good result for Liverpool. Sure, it would have been better to win the game, but a clean sheet is vital in this kind of competition because the away goals rule can have a huge impact on the final outcome. Liverpool will now go into the away fixture knowing that if they score just 1 goal, Bayern Munich will need to score 2. Indeed, any score draw will see Liverpool advance to the next stage of the competition. Performance wise, Liverpool showed glimpses of the worst and best that this team has to offer. Considering the fact that van Dijk, Gomez, and Lovren were all unavailable, a makeshift centre-back pairing of Matip and Fabinho did incredibly well to stop Bayern Munich from scoring. Alexander-Arnold returned to action at right-back but it should be noted that it will take him a little time to get back to his best. However, Liverpool made things difficult for themselves by giving the ball away in dangerous areas and generally making avoidable mistakes all over the pitch. It was these issues that led to the few chances that Bayern Munich had, but thankfully they didn't prove costly. The front three of Liverpool's attack in Salah, Mane, and Firmino were uncharacteristically wasteful with their chances and this really was the only thing that stopped Liverpool from going on to win the game. Although it was disappointing on the night, these things happen from time to time, and I expect a much better outing from them in the return leg. Keita once again showed that he has the ability to shine in this Liverpool team and it feels like it will only take a few more games before he really comes to life in the Reds' midfield. Fortunately for Liverpool, players are now returning from injury and it shouldn't be too long until the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gomez are available to make a contribution to the team again. The Final Word Although Liverpool should have won last night, this is a fairly good result for the Reds, and they will be confident that they can get the job done in the return fixture. Attention will now turn towards a huge game in the Premier League against Manchester United on Sunday, and Klopp will be hoping that his forwards can regain their composure in front of goal. Virgil van Dijk will also return to the starting 11, which is a huge boost for Liverpool's defence.
