EPL: Sterling Hatrick Propel City Further Closer To Title
Inspired by a Raheem Sterling hat-trick, Manchester City have moved three points closer to defending their title after dispatching Norwich City 0-4 at Carrow Road. Phil Foden added a fourth in between Sterling's hat-trick to move the log leaders further away from the chasing pack. Two changes for the Dean Smith's side that drew with Crystal Palace in midweek as Billy Gilmour and Josh Sargent returned to the fold. With the Champions League returning next week, Pep Guardiola made five changes to his team, three of those coming at the back. Nathan Ake, Kyle Walker and Oleksandr Zinchecko making the team. The visitors meant business from the get-go as they hit the woodwork early on. Riyad Mahrez made his way to the byline before sending a cross to Bernando Silva, whose shot on his weaker left foot came off the inside of the post and into the hands of Angus Gunn. The hosts were not sitting back as they create a chance of their own. Brandon Williams won the ball with a sliding tackle on Mahrez and led the counter for Norwich that released Teemu Pukki on the right side, but his effort was saved by Ederson Moraes at the near post. The Canaries looked ready for a fight to prevent the whitewash as happened in the reverse fixture, this time, also hitting the post. Pierre Lees-Melou sent a cross that Grant Hanley rose highest to head, but his header came off the woodwork before City could clear. City would respond, punishing a defensive error by Max Aarons, who failed to properly clear a cross from Kyle Walker and hit it straight at Sterling. The England international needed just one touch to set himself up and place into the bottom right corner before the Norwich defence could react. Just before the break, Gunn had to deny Mahrez City's second as the Algerian was setup by Silva, restricting the visitors to just a one-goal lead at the break. Three minutes after the restart was all it took City to double their lead. Ilkay Gundogan moving down the left flank sent a cross into the danger zone which was hit first time by Foden. His effort was saved by Gunn and he hit the rebound past the goalkeeper. Although the ball was cleared by Hanley, goal line technology ruled it had cross the line. It was not all gloom yet for the hosts as they continued to go in search of a goal. A loose ball was won at the edge of the City box by Kenny McClean, who set up Milot Raschica. The latter could only manage his effort straight at the goalkeeper. The game was put beyond the reach of Norwich in the 70th minute when Manchester City got their third. Ruben Dias the creator of this as he sent his header from a Foden cross back across goal for Sterling to tap in unmarked. Sterling completed his hat-trick on the stroke of 90 minute, even though not in the fashion he'd have wanted. Hanley, bundled down substitute Liam Delap in the box. Sterling missed the spot kick as his effort towards the right bottom corner was saved by Gunn. He was, however, quick to react to the rebound to complete his hat-trick. Concluding Thoughts With every game intensifies City's grip of the lead at the top of the log and they don't look like ones that are ready to slow down. While Liverpool may keep pushing them, I feel the league title is already decided. 9 points is a lot for City to throw away, given the amount of talent they have in team even when there is a rotation. Norwich should not be despondent to have lost to a side like Manchester City. It was their first loss in their last four league games having won two and drawn one of the previous three; a run that has given them hopes of survival as they currently sit four points off safety. The arrival of Dean Smith has coincided with their newly found form and hope, and their performance on the night was one that could have earned them three points against any other side on their level. Definitely lots of positives to build on for the Canaries.
