Opinion: Remove the 0-0 Tie from Soccer (Football), Here's How
Sunday morning, I witnessed the most boring and uneventful result in all of sports, a 0-0 tie in a soccer (football) match. My West Ham United Hammers played to a draw against Burnley after 90 minutes of play and stoppage time. I believe that the 0-0 tie should be removed from the game of soccer. Here is why I believe that this result should be prevented, and what I recommend to change this issue. What's Wrong with a 0-0 Tie? I am well aware that ties are an important part of the game of soccer. Because of the way the game is played, strategy, and difficulty, a tie can be a great result for some sides, especially underdogs who were thought to have no chance of competing against their opponent. A 0-0 tie, however is different. Scoreless ties encourage teams to not take chances and to sit back and only play defense. They are boring for fans and reward teams that are not actively trying to win a game. I believe that a solution to the 0-0 tie would encourage teams to be aggressive and add an exciting element to the game for fans. My Solution to the 0-0 Tie My proposed solution to the 0-0 tie is simple. For any match that ends in a 0-0 tie after stoppage time, must go into a shootout of only three chances for each side. If at the end of the three chances the game is still tied, the game does end in the tie. If a side outscores their opponent in this shootout, that team takes all three points. To avoid this shootout, teams would push at the end of matches to score, making for more exciting matches. We would also get to witness more shootouts without having them continue for round after round. What do you think of this proposed solution? Would this be good or bad for the game, and why?
