Once Again, Real Madrid Fall Short of Expectations
Image source It is fast becoming a norm that Real Madrid will drop points at the place and time you least expect them to. We all know this is football and you do not expect a team to win every fixture in a season but a team of Real Madrid's standards are not expected to drop points against a team like Osasuna who are struggling in relegation zone but alas, the white knights are full of surprises. Real Madrid have had four draws and three losses this season, that's 17 points lost and all have come at the hands of lowly rated teams. The match against Osasuna last night was just one of those games. Hazard made his first start in months, since returning from injury and was below par throughout the 75 minutes he was on the pitch. His connection with striker Benzema was at a disappointing level and the Frenchman was even worse than the Belgian. Asensio was the only bright Real Madrid attacker who strived to push them forward and make things happen and he improved from a disappointing first half in the second. While the whites were trying to make something happen in the opponent's half in the latter stages of the game, Zidane struck and raised some question marks over his mental state in the 'very cold' Spanish weather. The French coach took off one of his brightest players in Asensio and brought on Valverde. Although he would defend his decision with a change in formation to 4-4-2, which is expected to carve out more spaces in the 4-5-1 low and frustrating block Osasuna has set up, but the whites were doing just fine with wingers trying to break that block than packing midfielders without Ozil's vision. Image source The game was crying for a visionary attacking midfielder, exquisite winger and a striking wizard towards the end but Real Madrid apparently lacked all of those and had to settle for a draw. Another draw against a lowly rated team and that's 10 points off top spot if leaders Atletico win all their outstanding games. UTTERLY DISAPPOINTING!
