Finally, I had the week I've been dreaming of in fantasy golf in the BMW Championship freeroll last week. Out of over 36,000 entrants, I was able to finish 156th. There were times during the end of the tournament when I was in the top 50, but the final playoff between Keegan Bradley, who won the tournament, and Justin Rose, who was on my team, knocked me out of the top 100 players.
Here's a look at last week's lineup, my picks for next week's TOUR Championship, and information on how to join the freeroll (U.S. residents only, unfortunately).
Last Week's Amazing Lineup: BMW Championship
Sometimes you're lucky and sometimes you're just good. This past week, I believe I was a little of both. Billy Horschel is a wildcard who can show up and compete with anyone, or he can miss the cut. This past week he was phenomenal, shooting a 64, 67, 66, and a 64 to finish -19, which was good enough to tie for 3rd place. I also had Justin Rose who came in 2nd, Rory McIlroy who came in 5th, Gary Woodland who tied for 12th, and Bryson DeChambeau who finished tied for 19th.
Now let's look at my lineup for the upcoming TOUR Championship. The contest is now open although the tournament doesn't start until September 20th.
PGA Yahoo! Cup $1,000 Freeroll Lineup: TOUR Championship
The PGA FedExCup Playoffs are entering the fourth round as we head to East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Georgia. The salaries for players have shifted going into this round of the PGA Playoffs, with several golfers I really like in this tournament dropping in price.
As you can see, I was able to nab three of the top contenders -- Justin Rose ($45), Bryson DeChambeau ($40), who has won two of the three tournaments in this year's FedExCup Playoffs, and Tony Finau ($38) who has a great chance of winning the championship, while still fitting Tiger Woods ($32) onto my team.
Rose is red-hot with two straight 2nd place finishes and he is now the 2nd seed in the tournament. There are very few players on the Tour playing at his level and I think he's a must to add to your roster, even over Dustin Johnson ($50). As we've seen so far, DeChambeau is capable of winning any given tournament in the FedExCup Playoffs, and at 24, he's still finding his stride in the PGA and is bound to improve. He's shown the mental toughness to withstand a grueling schedule, and will take a week off before taking on the TOUR Championship field.
Finau has been annoyingly consistent without winning any of the tournaments in the playoffs. He has finished in the top 10 of all three events and is lined up to win it all if he can once again finish in the top 10 and hold off Rose, DeChambeau, and others.
Woods began last week's BMW Championship with an incredible 62, but couldn't continue at that level. Still, he finished tied for 6th. I don't expect Tiger to land inside the top 10 next week, but a top 20 finish is likely if he can regain consistency with his putter.
My team is rounded off with Woodland and Matsuyama. Woodland proved me right last week with a minimum salary, finishing 12th after shooting a 66, 66, 66, and a 67. The most baffling salary in this tournament for me is that of Matsuyama, who has not finished worse than 15th in the past four tournaments, but is still at only $24. I'm excited to add him at that price.
