If you are a martial arts instructor, you know very well you can apply different techniques against the same attack. Some techniques will work under certain circumstances. Some techniques look cool, but that might not work in real-life situations.

Today we are going to talk about what works against hair grab. When someone grabs your hair, you can attack the person. I see people teaching like when the attacker grabs your hair, attack the attacker, punch him, hit him with your finger.

If the attacker just grabs your hair, you can go for strikes. When you hit the attacker, he might not grab your hair anymore. The thing is when you fight for self defense, never ever underestimate the attacker. The attacker is not stupid. So he knows you can attack him.

Do you really think you can hit the attacker?

You can try it. You are going to lose your body balance or move here and there. Maybe you are wondering why this is happening. The fact is, the moment the attacker grabs your hair, he can control your body movement. He can control your head, which means he can move your body the way he wants. He can pull or push you here and there, you will find it difficult to attack. Even if you attack, that will not be effective.

But when you practice this with your training partner, he grabs hair, you easily hit him and defend yourself. Unfortunately, this is not going to work in real-life if the attacker moves you and control your body movement.

To defend yourself against hair grab, you can do a simple thing, and it would change the whole situation. So the attacker grabs your hair, no problem. Let him grab your hair. Actually, help him grabbing your hair. Just place your hand on the attacker's hand and grab his hand that holds your hair.

Maybe the attacker wants to let you go now, but he cannot do that. His hand gets stuck over there. Now you can attack him. You can do elbow strike, knee charge, hammer fist, palm strike, and so on. In this way, you can deal with this situation.
