As expected, after the bad results of several candidate teams at the beginning of the season, some layoffs of several MLB managers begin to be known. Today, 09/29/2019, we already know two new managers who will not continue with their teams in 2020, coincidentally, both share the same division: Chicago Cubs (Joe Maddon) and Pirates Pittsburgh (Clint Hurdle).

During the season, we have met some other managers who will not continue next season, both by personal decision. Such are the cases of: Bruce Bochy (Giants), who after 25 years directing in MLB, where he got +2000 victories and 3 World Series, will finish his career, and Ned Yost (Royals), who after 10 years in command in Kansas City and a World Series have also decided that it is time to retire.

Different is the case of Andy Green (Padres), who was fired by the San Diego front office on September 21 for his poor results, mainly because of the team's poor performance in the second half of the season.

To this list of dismissals can be added two more that are in the tightrope of their respective teams, we refer to Gabe Kapler (Phillies) and Mickey Callaway (Mets), the second perhaps with a little more chance of being saved, due to his good season finale. It will be a matter of waiting for the end of today's day, or a few more days to know the decisions that the respective offices will make.

The non-extension of Joe Maddon's contract implies that there will be few managers who are exempt from being fired for next season. Maddon led the Cubs since 2015, where he had a 97-65 record. The following season, he got his first World Series, winning the 4-3 series against the Indians, commanded by Terry Francona. That regular season he closed with 103-58, being the best of his career as Manager. It is important to remember that Maddon ended a drought of 108 years without titles (The Curse of the Goat) for the North Chicago team and leaves the city with the following records:

  • 1 World Series
  • 1 Pennant
  • Four consecutives years advancing to Postseason
  • Regular Season: 471 - 339 (.581)
  • Postseason: 19-18 (.514)

We will only have to wait to know who will be the next managers to be fired. Maddon, without any doubt, will be the "big fish" on the offseason as far as leaders are concerned. Many teams will already be after him.

And you, who do you think should be fired this 2019? What team do you think Joe Maddon falls to?
